BassTech Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 I've had an ICT teacher ask that Unity is installed in the ICT classrooms for September. I have said no based off the fact that they have not paid for the appropriate license. As their website states: Unity Personal may not be used by: a Commercial Entity that has either: (a) reached annual gross revenues in excess of US$100,000, or (b) raised funds (including but not limited to crowdfunding) in excess of US$100,000, in each case during the most recently completed fiscal year; a Non-Commercial Entity (this means academic and governmental entities as defined below) with a total annual budget in excess of US$100,000 (for the entire Non-Commercial Entity (not just a department)) for the most recently completed fiscal year; or an individual (not acting on behalf of a Legal Entity) or a Sole Proprietor that has reached annual gross revenues in excess of US$100,000 from its use of the Unity Software during the most recently completed fiscal year, which does not include any income earned by that individual which is unrelated to its use of the Unity Software. The teacher in question is adamant that it's installed, and will not accept that we need to pay for it, they keep saying that it doesn't matter as we're based in the UK not the US?? Wondering if anyone could confirm this to me? Obviously I don't want to break any copyright laws! but this teacher is really pushy.
synaesthesia Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Doesn't matter where you or they are based, or what currency the licensing states - it's not free if your budget is exceeding that amount which is certainly true for the vast majority of schools. 1

Yeah, thought as much, just wanted to be 100% as this teacher has a bit of a reputation for throwing their toys out of the pram Thanks!
Davit2005 Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Email Unity and confirm license restrictions forward response to teacher. You have an email trail then.
pcstru Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Some info : Reddit - UK Schools user posts info. Pro pricing.
free780 Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 The plugin is free. But since plugins are on the way out why would you want to deploy it.
BassTech Posted August 16, 2016 Author Posted August 16, 2016 Thanks for the info, I'll drop them an E-Mail on the off chance they will give us 1 license to use
FragglePete Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 You can ask Unity for an Education grant. We did and have been given licenses to run it on the school..... However.... for the life of me I can't get it working while logged in as a Student. Pulling my hair out. Pete
Leehilton90 Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 I know this is an old post, but did you get it working?
mavhc Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Same here, how did you deploy? Did it work in the end? I see there's a pdf for how to activate with a command line included in the education licence email. https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/DeployingUnityOffline.html choosing to save the downloaded installers generates an install.bat file Set env var for "HTTPS_proxy" to http://proxy:port Create a unity id for a generic account, unity@school, with a password to be shared, if you want students to use online access. Or they can click Work Offline once deployed with the bat file etc, run "C:\Program Files\Unity\Editor\Unity.exe" -quit -batchmode -serial -username -password "
MarcBeaudoin Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 Once installed, I tried running ""C:\Program Files\Unity\Editor\Unity.exe" -quit -batchmode -serial -username -password "". It seems to do something, bu unity still isn't activated, I need to do it manually.
finlaydude Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 I did a bit of digging on the Unity website and found that the deployment command line instruction is missing quotes - it should look like this: "C:\Program Files\Unity\Editor\Unity.exe" -quit -batchmode -serial -username "accountemailaddress" -password "password" As I've only got to deploy it to two IT suites I just use Impero to login to all of the stations simultaneously and run the batch file to install the software. After that it's just a case of running the command line via Impero to activate the license. If anyone knows how to get this working for students can they please share? The login screen just comes up blank, regardless of whether or not students are able to access the websites they tell you to allow.
NB9457 Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 We controlled all PCs at once using Lanschool and went through the manual activation as the batch script didn't seem to like to work on more than one machine at a time.
gerardsweeney Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 At the risk of resurrecting an old thread.. I've been asked to install Unity 3D in our school, and it's a pain in the nethers getting it to talk to our authenticated WebSense (or whatever they're called nowadays) proxy. With http_proxy and https_proxy environment variables set, it gets as far as recognising my Unity login ID and password. When it comes to the product activation (licence) part, I get a spinny wheel for a couple of seconds then it errors out. The log file shows a 407 error (proxy authentication required). Which - to my ignorant eyes - means that the proxy authentication works for the user name and password bit, but not the licence checking bit. Unity suggest whitelisting/proxy bypass for a couple of their sites. I've been advised that ain't happening. Unity tech support's latest reply where I explain all this - "add the environment variables" - Gggggnnnnnn, read what I'm telling you!! (and ... breathe)
MarcBeaudoin Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Unity suggest whitelisting/proxy bypass for a couple of their sites. I've been advised that ain't happening. Your infrastructure guys are telling that ain't happening? That's not helping! Tried the Offline Activation yet? https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/ManualActivationGuide.html
gerardsweeney Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 No comment I can't get it to show the "manual activation" option when running the software.. I'll maybe try yanking the ethernet cable out, see if that triggers it... Utter pain in the ..... Thanks for the suggestion.. I'd looked at it, but hadn't thought of pulling the ethernet, so it's another avenue to explore.
free780 Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 (edited) You need to add a few domains to your authentication exceptions. Unity does not work with NTLM or Kerberos . I've also found I've needed to allow the domains to completely bypass a managed proxy and instead go out through an intercepting proxy particularly if using collaboration. You can use unity in batch mode to licence using the unity account. This can be included in a script when deploying. Most of the installers just need /S to run silent. You must return licences before you reimage the pc or do an upgrade to 1803 or1809. Enjoy. I can post a powershell script I did for Unity. Edited September 5, 2018 by free780 1

free780 Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 (edited) Domains: *.unity3d.com *.unity.com *.pubnub.com Powershell to return licence Start-Process -wait "C:\Program Files\Unity\Editor\Unity.exe" -ArgumentList '-batchmode -returnlicense' Powershell to activate #Test for licence file if not present activate unity. If present do nothing if (-not(test-path "C:\ProgramData\Unity\Unity_lic.ulf")){ #Activate Unity start-process -wait "C:\Program Files\Unity\Editor\Unity.exe" -ArgumentList '-quit -batchmode -serial -username "" -password ""' -Verbose} else {$null} The log file is located in %appdatalocal%\Unity\Editor. Or if the SYSTEM account activates its in c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Unity\Editor . How may PCs are you installing it on? I have 112 so I need to use a Task Sequence to ensure the licencing is handled correctly. It is a pain Unity cant handle authenticating proxies. Increasingly though software doesn't seem to support it as the presumption is that devices are 1:1 and therefore the user authenticates at the connection level such as with 802.1x Wi-Fi. Though we need to support learners and teachers in the tools they choose. It could be worse you may have been asked for Unreal Engine. Edited September 5, 2018 by free780 2
Asgard Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 We deployed it as part of a task sequence / GPO this summer to just under 300 machines. Basically we have it installed it’s just moaning about 407 proxy haha Cheers again
free780 Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Its strange they seem to want to push into education. However the support isn't great and things such as Authenticating Proxy support Federated logins to AzureAD/G-Suite/ADFS seem to not be on the roadmap. A licence server for Unity Editor. I also had this issue last year. https://forum.unity.com/threads/unity-editor-will-not-open-present-as-a-background-task.486216/ It did get patched or may have an issue with Unity's CDN. I have submitted feedback at https://feedback.unity3d.com . If anyone wants to vote that would be appreciated. If Unity don't know the needs they may not build the features in.
Samm Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 I have been having the same problem, after a lot of playing around with proxy auth exceptions I have managed to get the software to activate manually but when i run batch mode i still get this error. BatchMode: Unity has not been activated with a valid License. Could be a new activation or renewal... (Filename: C:/buildslave/unity/build/Editor/Platform/Windows/WinEditorMain.cpp Line: 907)DisplayProgressbar: Unity licenseUnityConnectLoginRequest: Failed to login - please check your username or password (Filename: C:\buildslave\unity\build\Editor/Src/UnityConnect/UnityConnectLoginRequest.cpp Line: 31)No sufficient permissions while processing request "https://core.cloud.unity3d.com/api/login", HTTP error code 401.Cancelling DisplayDialog: Updating license failed Failed to update license within 60 seconds. Application will terminate with return code 1 Have checked and the username and password are correct but am unsure what the "No sufficient permissions" bit means, any ideas? Have contacted Unity support multiple times but they seem to be ignoring us Cheers
gerardsweeney Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 Glad it's not just you that's being ignored. In their defence - they did get back to me to say to add a new environment variable : set Unity_PROXYSERVER={etc} That got me a different error message in the log about the certificate, and then it was back to suggesting proxy bypasses.. Sigh.
gshaw Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 Did anyone hear back from Unity after requesting an Educational Grant? Not had anything back from them either way so stuck in limbo at present.

Sigh. Thanks interesting as they told me to add an environment variable called “HTTPS_proxy" and that didn't work. and then they never replied to that ticket again. Have you got any more info on the Unity_PROXYSERVER= variable? Did anyone hear back from Unity after requesting an Educational Grant? Not had anything back from them either way so stuck in limbo at present. Yes they got back to us about 4 weeks after we applied and gave us 60 licences.
