Official: MacBook Air is crap*

IF YOU ARE a Mac fanboy reviewer and you think that anything that comes from Apple must be great, what do you do when something clearly isn't?

 

Paul Venezia from InfoWorld seemed to have hit this crisis of faith when he came to look at Apple's MacBook Air.

I don't understand the problem here... The guy tried to migrate from one machine to another - with the new one having too small a hard disk to copy to.

 

Have you tried migrating from one windows machine to another?? No simple easy 'click here' wizard as far as I'm aware.

 

So it is his own fault for not buying a laptop that could do the job he required it to do...

 

But then, if I said all that I'd sound like a Mac fanboy even though I'm just being realistic.

anyone who has even slightly looked at the Air would realise its ment to be a companion to your 3.2Ghz 8 core, 16GB RAM, 2TB HD, Dual 30inch screen mac pro.

 

on a more serious note, apple missed the chance to make a great sub-notebook but missed the mark by a long way on this imo.

Never tried it but yeh windows has a migration wizard.

No idea how or if it works but it exists.

It doesn't work that bad I've been told, know a few people that have used it with good success.

There are 2 in fact.. The normal user one is the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (aka FAST) - plug a cable into both PCs and set it going. The beefy one is the User State Migration Tool - that's for moving loads of people in a domain environment, typically if you're replacing a load of office PCs with new ones and the lusers want to keep their pictures of bunny rabbits/puppy dogs on their desktops.

 

I imagine they've jazzed it up a little in Vista - 3D animations of a new computer eating an old computer's soul etc.

sounds complicated, I just normally copy my /home/cybernerd directory to the new machine. then again, apparently not everyone can use linux....

Yes, yes you can. just copy the /Users/$username directory...

You can indeed do that ... and that is how I migrated from my powerbook to my first macBook. I then used the applie migration tool to move to the second macbook ... and did it to get to the MacBookPro.

 

I then did a rebuild as I had filled my machine with crap and wanted to strip back before getting serious with bootcamp.

 

I used the user state migration tool to move from my XP desktop to my XP install on bootcamp, but buggered that by then upgrading to Vista on it.

 

I need to do clean builds of both now and be picky about what I migrate across.

 

I still prefer to migrate on a piece by piece basis ... mail, documents, etc ... but that is mainly because I fil my machines up with crap and need to strip it down at least once a year.
