lovelldr Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Hi guys... We're currently looking in to a classroom management / monitoring solution at the trust of schools. Looking around, a lot of people used to favour Impero over NetSupport... But, I see a lot of issues recently with current versions of Impero... What would people recommend between the 2? Based on quotes I've seen for Impero, this is nearly 2 (or treble if we bought the license just for our school and not all schools in the trust). Support costs are only slightly cheaper with NetSupport however... So, what would people recommend between the two? Has anyone recently used both and decided on one rather than the other? Cheers David

timbo343 Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 I prefer Impero (yes it has its faults) but i think @stgoodyeara might be able to give a better comparison. 1
angrycomputingteacher Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I've heard good things about Impero... but I am stuck with iTalc (free) because of my school's infrastructure. 1
NB9457 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Impero is very good, but seems to be hitting a few bumps as of late, other than that, I do quite like it. Netsupport DNA, whilst newer than Impero, seems to be very sturdy and constantly growing stronger. Support seems great too and if you you have any issues, Al will get them sorted for you! They also seem to be extremely cheap lately, but this in no way reflects upon the product, you get a lot more than what you pay for! 2
lovelldr Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 Still trying to sell it to other colleagues and the business manager... To me, NetSupport seems a no brainer. We are ideally wanting to use them to monitor the iPads as well. My colleague has been told that Impero can still monitor and control iOS devices through the windows console. From what I was aware, no classroom monitoring software could do this on iOS 9... Is anyone using Impero on an iOS 9 device that can control and monitor them through the Windows console? But, that fact that I can get the perpetual license for around 1/3 cheaper for NetSupport rather than Impero, and then the ongoing support at 1/6 of the Impero support, I'm inclined to go for NetSupport... Just hope I can get the go ahead... 1
jonemery99 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 We recently faced this decision, netsupport was a no brainier for us!! Pricing, support and overall product is better! All just seems more thought out and intuitive! Staff love it too! 1

I was using it in anger back in 2008 and found it to be very capable. I can't comment on Impero as I have never used it I'm afraid, and will leave that to members that are.
Wubbalubbadub Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Iv been waiting for 3 months for a fix from impero! So I don't suggest them currently
tj2419 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 We bought into impero in April and massively regretting it! We had a few issues on the trial but were told these would all be fixed when we were upgraded to a permanent licence. Some of these issues still exist and others have appeared along the way and we just keep getting told it will be fixed in the next version. I was told when we bought the software that we didn't have to buy into the support contract each year if we didn't want to but at this rate it just wont work without it. Support takes ages to get back to us. To have owned the software an not had it fully working since buying it three months later is unacceptable if you ask me. Overall if i could get my money back i would but we paid for a perpetual licence

Lovelldr - with iOS7 - iOS8 it was possible to monitor the screen of an iPad by creating an Enterprise App*, this allowed developers like ourselves (NetSupport) and Impero to use undocumented API's that would not be allowed in the Apps store however, it has never been possible to 'control' an iPad. When Apple released iOS 9 these API's stopped working, and so did NetSupport and Impero's ability to monitor the iPad. As far as I am aware there is no workaround currently available (I have spoken to Apple regarding this). It is possible to view your own App - for example in NetSupport School (and Impero) if the Student/agent is open you can see this but not the home screen or other apps which is what you would want. Ask to try before you buy! Happy to discuss in more detail with you if you want to call me at NetSupport on 01778 382296. *According to the Apple Enterprise agreement enterprise apps are only for use by the organisation who the enterprise certificate belongs to. NetSupport made it clear to customers that they would need their own enterprise certificate. Edited July 14, 2016 by Matt_NetSupport
karldenton Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 We trialled Impero - was expensive and didn't do everything we needed to. Got NetSupport from Al and its perfect. Doesn't do patch management but we don't need it to. Works great from a network admin and e-safety point of view. Support has been great too - no long queues

I guess we'll see when I trial it...
Wubbalubbadub Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 I'm sad to say I don't recommend impero to anyone anymore! Unless you want the typical "it will be fixed in the next patch" speech, every time you call! I stupidly bought a 3 year licence!

Kearton - I believe (like NetSupport and Impero) LanSchool allows teachers/techies to remotely monitor its own app - but as I mentioned in an earlier post this is not what I expect customers want. Apple don't currently provide a method to monitor the home screen and other apps. I can confirm that NetSupport does work with iOS9 and we are currently testing iOS10!
