Classroom Lesson recording

Hi Everyone,

 

I hope this is in the right area, I have been asked by the management to look into some sort of classroom lesson recording system setup for CPD and training purposes and i was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations of any systems that might be in use?

We use MEDIAL | Media Library Software streaming server and the other day, we had a live demo of their forthcoming lecture capture software. It looks really good and is teacher proof. They said it should be live by Aug/Sept and they are looking for early adopters. The work "discount" was mentioned in this regard. We're being upgraded next week so we can take advantage of the live streaming feature.

I recommend VEO http://www.veo-group.com over Iris. We are looking at moving to VEO once we have the Swivl C5 kit, once it lands in the UK. Videos and be uploaded from any video capture device (ios and andriod through apps, otherwise have to be uploaded via a desktop or anything with a browser) and downloaded back to a desktop, the company are open to suggestions, managemeny can each report back on their videos, its very flexible. Pricing is good too.

^ Someone here's using VEO and likes it a lot. It is very easy to use. The downside is that you can't* (for example) export a video with the annotations embedded, so you're tied into the service. If you leave/pick another provider, the annotations are gone.

 

*as of the last time I spoke to them about spending money.

Thanks for the quick responses guys, i have double checked and it looks like they want a physical camera system to record the whole lesson and not just the presentation/PC side of things. Is VEO capable of this?

Yeah, id expect that, thats the same as iris as thats the sevice that your're paying for.

You would have to purchase a camera but this can be done on a mobile device. As long as you have a device that records a video you can upload it to VEO. If you have an android or iOS device, jum on to the stores, download the demo and test it. You get about 5 tests with them.

We are purchasing the C5 as we want staff to hear the class. The theory behind it is, the teacher will have a Mic around their neck and 4 other mics will be placed around the room to capture what students say. We have an old SWIVL(the black version) which only has 1 microphone, so teachers are complaining that they cannot hear students as the mic is round the teachers neck not in the middle of the room.

We use lessonbox, very good quality kit, fairly easy to use.

Medial can live stream your tablet, phone etc and you can permanently keep the live stream. That's what we're going to use it for. You'll need an HLS app on your iOS or Android device (eg Wowza GoCoder)

I've been playing with a homebrew solution using a Ricoh Theta S and a tablet/phone and cardboard. Very easy and cheap but sound is a bit quiet and no external mic connection. Still, for £250...

Us, along with other North Yorks schools are in the same boat but we've had it for 3, coming up 4 years. Its been a dust collector for most of that. We have tried to make it simple of users to use but they just dont "get it", hence we are looking at SWIVL and VEO.

We have IRIS here and it's getting people to use the thing thats a pain. I end up setting it up for them in class as they have no idea, one recorded a session of just the ceiling as they couldnt work out how to adjust the tripod..SMH.

 

I sell it as "would you rather have SLT tutting in the corner making notes, or be able to watch your own mistakes and learn from it". Most "NQT" or new ish teacher will have a go or 3, but the older generation won't touch it.

We also had IRIS, but again - getting people to use it was difficult. Wasn't our choice, but we had to support it. Barely had it 6 months before it was removed; I think the other issue was that teachers didn't like being recorded. Whether that's because they were worried about their teaching methods or other reasons, I wouldn't know.
