System Center Configuration Manager

Hi,

I have heared a lot about System Center Configuration Manager on here, and wanted to know if anyone had any documents on setting it up from scratch, i will set up a Virtual Server to test on before we use on our live network so I can have a play and see how it works. but any help on setting up would be great. Documents/Websites.

 

I have Server 2012r2 Curric and Server 2008 Admin with Sims

10Windows 10 Laptops and 30 Desktops running windows 10

I followed this guide and got mine running in about 5 hours including the clients on all the PC's and Endpoint Protection configured and installed.

Once you have 1511 installed, you then need to follow this one to upgrade to 1602

100% Agree, I got left with a 50% working SCCM and no knowledge of it! These guides were a godsend!

used these ones when i dabbled with setting it up and got it up and running for me.

There is / was some useful resources on petenetlive.com but i think those were for an older version (some of the setup requirements are the same i think)

The one I missed the first time that meant starting again from scratch was changing the Collation in the SQL setup from the default to SQL_Latin1_General

 

Oh how I laughed when later I found a command line that changed it retrospectively and would have saved me a couple of hours....

Yes. However, it is very cheap for schools, and if you're using EES already, you probably already have licenses for it anyway as its included with the standard CAL and desktop bundles. The only thing you have to pay extra for is the licenses to manage servers.

The licensing covers a set of products - one of which is the SCCM CAL. So, you'd be covered for all desktop devices under that.

Ok, think I'd better clarify the licensing for SCCM.

 

To run SCCM server you don't need any licenses.

Instead, you have to have licenese for the machines you are managing. Desktops and Servers are licensed differently.

 

Here, under EES, we pay for the Education Desktop with Core CAL Suite. This includes SCCM Client Management licenses for all desktop PCs. We then pay for 4 x SCCM Datacenter Server Management licenses, 1 per processor in our hyper-V cluster. Then we pay for SCCM standard server licenses for our other physical servers.

 

There's no actual license to run the SCCM server software.

Sorry buddy im confusing myself hear.

 

We have a MAK key for a site license which goes off how many staff and student we have. Microsoft give us a estimate of how many license we should have for the school

 

But our serve licenses we buy individual as we don't have that many servers on site

Not particularly clear what scheme you buy your licenses under. Do you use EES (OVS-ES) or Select for the windows clients?

In which case, you should check exactly what item you buy to cover the desktops. EES's "Education Desktop with Core CAL Suite" includes the CALs for SCCM for all desktops.
