Fibre Help

We are just having a new fibre link put in between two cabinets, i always struggle when it comes to fibre as i rarely use it in the small schools i look after.

 

The networking guys left it terminated in a patch panel, i'm unsure on the following;

 

- Which fibre connector is that?

- Which SFP Module would i need, switches at both ends will be a Netgear GS752TS

They appear to be LC connectors.

 

I've used some Planet MGB-SX in our GS728's without any problem (and they were half the price of the Netgear one)

I was unaware i could use 3rd party ones. Does anyone know if the following would work or is it a case of try it?

Yes you can use 3rd party ones, but it does depend on if they state they are compatible or not.

These are the ones I bought, and I got an extra pair just in case they fail (or my pairs of proper AGM731F fail)

They are LC connectors. As for the transceiver, it depends on the speed and distance you need, any Netgear compatible modules will be ok for you. I have used Netgear compatible SFP module from fs.com many times and never had any issues. Hope it helps.

Check the cable that comes out the back for any markings along the cable. It is likely to be 62.5/125 multimode om4 (maybe om3) and is lc terminated so getting patch leads and sfp module to match would be ideal.

The distance of the fibre line would determine whether you bought sx or lx module transceivers for your switches.

 

Chances are the sx is what you need. The sx transceivers support upto about 500m. Whereas the lx support greater distance and are more expensive.

 

My personal opinion would be to use genuine modules especially in your core but using compatibles are growing fairly common at a more affordable price. I do have a couple in my core to the less dense edge switches due to financial restraints and to date not seen any difference.

 

The choice is yours.
