Me me me!! I love Civ V - totally hooked. Although it's frozen on me a few times recently :( think it might be CPU overheating - gonna dust my PC out tonight.

Yeah, Civ V got a lot of bad press early on, but I really love it as well! My only gripe is that when the game gets into the modern era, if you're playing with a lot of AI on a big map the turns take forever to calculate. Apparently they're using DX12 on VI so this should improve things. Also my AMD Phenom II 1055T chip is quite old now but a better CPU means I also need a new motherboard :(

 

@DJ-1701 - You must try it, especially if you're into stratergy games! The learning curve may be a little steep for a newcomer but it's so worth investing your time in!

Treat yourself. Do you play on multiplayer? I really enjoy these sorts of games. I'm not bothered about shooting games, I love the strategy of Civ. However, I don't think I'll buy it at release, as I imagine it'll be really expensive - I'll likely wait a few months for the price to drop. I got my Civ V with all DLC in a Humble Bundle. Absolute bargain.

Haha did I? I totally spent all weekend playing - that's soooo bad!! Although I won as India last night. Well, if you count winning as everyone sulking and leaving by about turn 80 then I won...!

Civ V was released on Linux and VI support was announced too. I'd very much doubt DX12 has anything to do with any improvements.

 

idk that's just what I read on the Civ forums...

Never played online on it, I like to have a single player game going, usually takes me weeks to complete 1 game

This is sadly what put me off Civ 5 and a lot of similar games. I love having a ton of options and ways to do things but Civ 5 did a terrible job of explaining what actual effect different things had. I.e. selecting this gives you +%5 fimbledinklers, nowhere does it tell you what the hell fimbledinklers are though. I'm sure it makes sense if you played previous games but as a newcomer to the series it did put me off. I played for about 20 hours (on my first game) and didn't really feel like I was getting anywhere or even figuring out what was going on.

 

I will have to give it another go as I really, really want to like it.

Maybe I should wait till October then for Civ VI, when some more people will be confused. ;)

I'ld be interested to know how you get on again if you do startup Civ V. :)

They actually have a really good Help section in the game to explain most things.

I've been playing since Civ 3 and still constantly learning new things, it's a HUGE game with so many variables, it's easy to get overwhelmed. My advice would be to start a custom game, make the map small with 2 or 3 AI opponents and put it on easiest difficulty and go from there.

Setting the game to just 1 type of victory is a good idea (Science, Cultural, Domination etc), that way you can focus all of your resources on one thing and learn how different game mechanics can impact your Civilization.

 

I always focus on money personally and when I have a nice amount buy myself a huge army and take over the world, ICMBs FTW.

I normally go money focus and buy votes, @CAM found that out last time we played. All the UNs are belong to me.

 

Well, they would.. if we didn't hit turn timers ._.

There's also a good wiki app for Civ V - I always leap to that when I try a new Civ. Has so much information.

 

I found that I learnt so much more by playing online and simply asking other players questions. I don't know how I was getting through the games before that!
