DJ-1701 Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 If only it was a Compaq LTE 5280 laptop. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/news/169660-mclaren-needs-20-year-old-compaq-laptop-maintain-its-f1-supercar.html
p858snake Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 EduGeek should start a museum with some of the objects that users locate.

Dos_Box Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Keep it! Out of interest, when was the last time it was booted up before you did it?
Dos_Box Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 (edited) Here is some history for the beast. I note that it was £4500 (approx) when new!! Compaq Portable SLT/286 1903 - Computing History Edited May 30, 2016 by Dos_Box 2
mdrabble Posted May 30, 2016 Author Posted May 30, 2016 No idea when it was last turned on - used to belong for father in law. I was amazed it still worked
Norphy Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 It's amazing just how things have progressed in such a short time. I've used servers smaller than that thing which are probably several orders of magnitude faster.
elsiegee40 Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Just showed Mr gee40 the pictures. He has 'fond' memories of lugging these to audits in the late 1980s.
just_david Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 wifes suggestion: Gut it and put in new internals. go to coffee shop and be a hipster king
elsiegee40 Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Just showed Mr gee40 the pictures. He has 'fond' memories of lugging these to audits in the late 1980s. The predecessor he used to have to lug was a Compaq portable like this It weighed around 5 tonnes and it was the job of junior trainees like him to get them to audits. They were however allowed to get a taxi on expenses if they were in charge of these, so it wasn't all bad! 1
DJ-1701 Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Make sure it's protected for the millennium bug before reuse. 1
elsiegee40 Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Make sure it's protected for the millennium bug before reuse. I doubt that anyone had thought about the millennium bug at that point 1

DalekSec Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 'Laptop' If you stuck that on your lap you will have no legs left! 1
elsiegee40 Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 'Laptop' If you stuck that on your lap you will have no legs left! What with that and their 'mobile' phone, the late 20th century business executive is easily identified these days by a pronounced stoop and chronic back pain. 1
DJ-1701 Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 'Laptop' If you stuck that on your lap you will have no legs left! Legend has it, that is why the term Notebook came up.
sted Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 It's amazing just how things have progressed in such a short time. I've used servers smaller than that thing which are probably several orders of magnitude faster. I suspect a smart watch is more poweful 1
jdoyle Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 used to have these Compaq SLTs at a company I used to work at. US Robotics modem attached for remote access. We had Harvard Graphics, Multimate, cc:Mail, Lotus 1-2-3 on them if I remember correctly.
