Alternative for Movie Maker on Win10

Hey,

 

I've got a couple of teachers who need a simple movie editor on their machines, but I'm not really sure what to offer... They asked specifically for Windows Movie Maker but it's been out of support since Windows 8 by the looks of it, and we have Windows 10 deployed so that's a no go.

 

Any ideas?

You can still install it in W10 IIRC (obviously on your own if any problems, though!).

When was the last time you needed support from Microsoft for Movie Maker? If like us the answer is 'never' then dont worry about support and install it anyway!

We've found WeVideo to be really quite usable:

A bit more functionality than MovieMaker - not up to Premier Pro standards, but not bad. It's web-based, so staff can edit from whatever machine they happen to be on. Suitibility will depend on your Internet connection (although it really doesn't use that much bandwidth by today's standards) and length of video - it's probably not the best thing for editing 2-hour solid takes of school productions and so on.

Windows 10 doesn't come with .NET 3.5 installed which means that Movie Maker (amongst other things) wont run.

To fix, get the file microsoft-windows-netfx3-ondemand-package.cab from the Windows 10 install and run

DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:"\[source_location]

If you try and install moviemaker/ essentials 2012 it will prompt for .net to be installed once it has completed it will resume the install.

Seems to work ok, for me it a good package for learning video editing / creation without blowing people away with a massive interface.

Forgot about that! We use SCCM for pushing out our builds for Windows 8.1u1 and have that as part of the task sequence
