Thanks, it does start the service but still gives the same errors.

If your only DC is on that host, it can be turned on fine afterwards. If you have another that is still working, it will be tombstoned after a period and won't work. Not had to check these time periods for a while now, so have a search. Only restore a DC from backup if it's the only one.

As to the task at hand - I wish I could help more, but this is tricky. Do you have a system state backup of the host? Are your VMs on another drive/LUN so that you can nuke the OS and re-import them?

I had a Hyper-V host die recently. It was fairly new and not running much, and the backups allowed me to restore the VMs on it to another host. Turned out the RAID controller was dying - replaced and now seems happy again.

Yes we have another DC

Yes have system state backup

Yes have host backups of the VM's

Yes VM's are on another partition

Going to do a re-build.

Question, Normally when I install an OS I select Custom but should I do upgrade in this case?????

Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files and settings

or

Custom: Install Windows only

Thanks for the help. So far I have installed host, restored data vm with Sims and FMS and all staff work docs.

Just getting ready to restore system state. Never had to do this on a live system before so some hand holding would help.

What should be done before running the restore?

Q1 - should the new to be DC server be named the same as the DC that I am going to restoring

Q1 - should I set the same IP address.

Q1 - should the server already be domain joined

As far as im aware, all apart from static ip should be all in the system state. I would just restore to a clean install.

Great, just had a glitch Windows update on my soon to be DC. Luckily had not started the system state restore.

Better start re-installing Windows again. ahhhh

Just thinking ahead (still installing windows updates) this DC also had DHCP running. Should I use a backup of DHCP that I took about 2 weeks ago or start over.

How old is your system state backup? I assume it would be restored with that

Yep - it's included as part of the System State from 2008 server onwards iirc.

I know AD + DNS is restored but not sure about DHCP.

System State was taken just before server went down so only a couple of days.

Thats good, was hoping you was going to say it wasnt over 2 weeks old!

Do a system state restore before anything, then fill in the gaps after.

Do you not have a secondary dhcp you could just replicate back if needed?

HELP NOT GOOD. BTW its 2012r2 server

just did the dc restore

went in to safe mode

restored from backup (non auth restore)

reboot server

Needed to login as local admin

disabled safe mode

rebooted

login using my domain admin acc and it said I have been logged in with a temporary user profile

I can access DNS but not AD users

Error when trying to access AD is - naming info can not be located: server not operational

Do you have a 2nd dc? Is that functional? Sure the restored dc needs to update from working dc in non-auth restore.

Never done it myself so only going on knowledge

Rebuild it and promote it from scratch otherwise. Its just a DC and will sync and pull the info from the second dc.

If you need to force the second dc to take the roles.

OK - logged in using another domain account and that has worked. phew, thank god I have another account.

Could just be a dodgy local profile then - if you can login as another account rename the ntuser.dat to .bak (or something) and try and login again.

NEW Problem

the only account I seem to be able to use is the main administrator acc. If I copy the main admin account and setit up as admin 2 and then login as this new admin acc I get the following error across the desktop

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

I am then unable to click on the windows start. hmmm
