Garageband VS ?!

With budget cuts it's looking like we cannot afford to replace our current apple suite used by music. The main reason they use the macs is for garageband, I know it's free with OSX, I am looking to replace the them with Windows PC's using MIXCRAFT 7 (not free) has anyone made the crossover and used MIXCRAFT 7 or anything similar?

What age / specification / state of repair are the Macs in? Our music teacher seems to be getting on quite well with Soundtrap, a web-based audio editor - if you have a decent bandwidth / low latency Internet connection it might be suitible for you.

Just my two pence worth, but we've found that the value for money offered by Garageband (for what it does) and the cheap cost of Logic Pro has meant that our iMacs worked out cheaper than PCs to do the same job, and have arguably been better. We kept them fresh by putting in more RAM and SSDs - can you do that?

We have already put in extra RAM, they are coming upto 7 years old so still a little life in them. Just been told when it is time to go they won't be replaced and will have to get Windows PC's.

Being a currently supported model, able to run El Capitan, I would recommend getting more life from them. We have a suite of (probably) the same model. 4GB of RAM (up from 1GB) and 250GB Samsung 850 EVOs. They are noticeably quicker than our 2014 Mac Minis as a result. Stick with them!
