We have Vimeo blocked entirely, as I have not found a way to unfilter individual videos (the cdn has to be unfiltered for any to work it seems). Why do so many education sites host videos on Vimeo when its full of adult content (a quick search for t*ts on a normal connection will show this)?
tomo1095 Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Only reason I can see for uploading to vimeo over YT is the fact they're less stringent on copyright protection. People might assume it's more for "commercial/corporate" videos than youtube as well I suppose. - Also sometimes I think it's easier embedding from vimeo than youtube on some web platforms. I'd always use youtube though. Tried and tested, with adult content adequately blocked and the ability to just unblock certain videos with smoothwall.
synaesthesia Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I make a habit of contacting anyone silly enough to use Vimeo for hosting educational videos and informing them of the problems they and their clients face. It's a silly thing to do. Not a huge amount different to Edugeek deciding to host everyone's pictures uploaded to here at Pornhub.

Why anyone with a target audience of education would use Vimeo etc is beyond me.

If it's a subscription service it should be easier to cancel than if you had boxed software to return. But basically - that's the way I'd approach it. If the company gets rejected sales due to poor practices, they may change them. Opening up Vimeo is not a good option - I recently had to reject a very decent looking Music resource website because they use Vimeo hosting. 1
localzuk Posted October 18, 2016 Author Posted October 18, 2016 Nope, still no way round this. Vimeo is remaining firmly blocked here. Had to turn down videos for our head that were for a child protection site that were hosted there!! 1
haci Posted October 18, 2016 Posted October 18, 2016 Cheers for the replies, they apparently purchased both before the summer so distance selling act is out not sure if it's a one off or subscription based model but will look into it. SLT and safeguarding officer have backed me on this \o/ so it will remain blocked, even though its a win it feels a little like a loss because it should never have happened and wouldn't if procedure had been followed, I also hate being the guy that says no :/

We have created a custom category on our Smoothwall which unblocks only the following URLs. This enables embedded Vimeo videos to be played but users cannot access the Vimeo website directly, or load videos linked from search results. player.vimeo.com secure-a.vimeocdn.com av.vimeo.com secure-b.vimeocdn.com vimeocdn.com utmtrk.vimeo.com 5

Pretty easy on our system - add an educational website to the whitelist, tick "Apply to embedded Vimeo videos", job done - all vimeo vids embedded in that site will work. (There's also an option for Youtube).

My management is from our COO/CEO here. Heads can request things, but the final say is with the COO/CEO. How do you determine if an embedded video contain education or porn(ish) ? Are you saying if I go to any website that uses embedded Vimeo videos that contain in-appropriate material they will play ? Does this allow you to play videos hosted on Vimeo and embedded on another website (like an educational website) whilst accessing that website. IE I go to Hegarty Maths and I can watch the embedded Vimeo videos whilst on their site, but if I go to another site that has embedded videos from Vimeo then they will not play ? Thanks in Advance

I've you're using an Opendium Web Gateway or Opendium UTM, go to Web Proxy -> Filter Override Editor, right click the Whitelist (or any other override that's set up as a whitelist) and click Edit URIs. Click Add URI in the popup box and add the address of the educational website (you can be as specific or general as you like here - just entering the domain name is usually fine). Tick the Apply to Embedded Vimeo Videos checkbox, then Ok and then Save. When a user visits the educational website, the system will analyse the web pages they are visiting in real-time, identify any Vimeo videos that are embedded in them and temporarily whitelist those specific videos just for that user. Your normal filtering rules will continue to apply to the rest of the Vimeo website. This also works for YouTube videos if you tick the Apply to Embedded YouTube Videos checkbox. If you have any problems, please give support a ring. If you're using a different system, I'm sure their support people can tell you if it can do something similar and how to set it up if so.

I've tried blocking vimeo.com and allowing the previously shown list to only allow embedded videos, but it doesn't work for sites with embedded videos like this: https://classroom.thenational.academy/subjects-by-year/reception/subjects/foundation/ Unless you have full access to vimeo you just get a blank screen? So with smoothwall it looks like you have full access to vimeo, or you unblock each video using its ID but there's too many to do this manually!
