Remove "Other User" wording from login screen

Really close to finishing my Windows 10 build, have most things customised now including getting rid of that horrible sad face user badge on the login screens

 

However, although not mission critical, the "other user" wording on the login screen is annoying me

 

 

Anyone know how to get rid of that or change the wording to say "Enter Username"? I can't find it anywhere so I suspect it's in a dll file somewhere?

Hi Andrew, We are at the same stage as you and I am looking for the same solution. I only have that and an issue that when a user logs out the logout screen reverts back to the default windows blue. Do you have the same issue?

I have removed the requirement to press CTRL-ALT-DEL for login which by default then also disables the lock screen and associated wallpaper so it keeps my custom backgroundDefault.jpg So far doing it this way it always sticks with my custom wallpaper even if the user locks the screen with Win+L

Just out of interest how did you get rid of the user badge? I hate that face!!

 

I thought it would be impossible but in fact it's the easiest hack in Windows 10. Simply delete the images in c:\programdata\microsoft\User Account Pictures and it disappears from the login screen!! You can also replace it with your own schools logo if you use the exact same file names and size, just replace them in the directory and it appears automatically on the login screen.

Do you still have the lock screen enabled in 10 as how that article reads is that you are changing the lock screen only?

It's in [credprovs.dll.mui]

Location depends on display language, for example:

\Windows\System32\en-GB\

Though I don't expect it'll load the logon UI if tampered with...

just attempted this with 10 and it appears to just ignore it..

 

 

GPO set & image placed in correct folder

 

CTRL ALT DELETE not required for login lock screen is set for the user i set it for manually but not forced across everyone and when i click past the lock screen the default blue hero screen is there.

i must be missing a step?

In W7 this works with an issue

I use a slightly different method. Download - Windows 10 Login Changer - By Alphawaves - and this will allow you to set the background image on the sign in screen. I then made a logo 192 x 192 pixels png file and called it user-192 and then copied that into

the c:\programdata\microsoft\User Account Pictures folder. This now gives me a corporate user image for all users and a set background for the username/password screen. I also copy a background and logon screen image to the Windows web and screen folders and

set this on the local computer group policy User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Desktop and Configuration/Administrative Templates/Control Panel/Personalization. This then gives you a full corporate feel on everthing. If you do this on your reference workstation before you sysprep it will apply to all new workstations.

I love it how @AJWhite1970 starts a thread about getting rid of 'Other User' and we all badger him about changing his login background

I admit I'd like to get that done, too, but I'm also interested in getting rid of (or replacing) 'Other User' if anyone finds a way

unfortunately it seams at this time there isn't an option to change it, however with server 2016 just round the corner, hopefully microsoft will realises some more gpo options for windows 10... Hopefully that is :L

Nope We replaced the stroppy cyclops with our school logo, which looks nice, but haven't found a way to get rid of "Other user". It's annoying, but there's no operational difference, so it's not really high priority.

we have replaced the logo and the backdrop colour using a 3rd party application (not my preferred method) seems to work ok but sometimes defaults to blue and then refreshes, then the correct colour appears

Hi All,

 

If anyone is interested I managed to find a solution to change the "Other user" text on the login screen.

Here is a screenshot of our login screen:

 

We changed the text to our school name and the picture is a effort at a 'Material design' concept of our school, i think it flows pretty well!

 

To change the text, the file in question that needs editing is "credprovhost.dll.mui" which is located in "C:\Windows\System32\en-US"

To edit the file I used a DLL file editor called ResEdit which is pretty simple to use. Here is the process you need to go through:

 

1. Once installed the software, run it and select "Hacker mode" from the menu

 

2. Open the "String Table" from the menu on the left and locate the Other User string, should be ID number 100

 

3. Once you have selected the Other user string, change the text to your custom text and then save the file.

 

I saved a backup of the file before which I advise you to do.

 

Once done, just add a GPO to overwrite the file at boot, but test the file on one machine first!
