Hi all

 

Just wondering, i'm looking at getting a new TV for the bedroom (currently have some ~8 Year old 32" Toshiba, which by today's standards looks gargantuan.)

 

Want to down size, though a new 32" TV may look tiny in comparison to the one I have already

 

I know all about HD Ready and Full HD etc etc, just wondering, if, in any of your experiences, the difference between these two is noticeable on tv's 32" or smaller. Over half the TV's below 32" seem to be mostly HD Ready instead of Full HD.

 

TV is going to be mostly used for DVD's or PS4.

I have a 32" Sharp 1080p LED on the wall in the bedroom and I can't tell the difference between films running at 1080 and 720.

32" is the sort of tipping point - most newer TVs do support full 1080p these days, but you'll probably struggle to tell the difference unless you have exceptionally good eye sight.

 

For image clarity, it's definitely the Hertz (Hz) you want to look out for. NTSC is 60Hz in the US and PAL/SECAM is 50Hz in Europe. My 32" Samsung supports 200Hz and makes the image super crisp. My 40" Samsung supports 1000Hz and is even better.

 

It's definitely worth investing in something decent, seeing as you'll spend considerable time staring at it :)

1080p is so cheap nowadays financially it just doesn't make any difference. Go for more pixels for the same price...

 

Seems to make more of a difference than i thought it would, especially for the more premium brands (LG, samsung etc)

It's also annoying that there seems to be a huge gap between loads of 22-24then barely anything up to 32, then loads again.

For DVDs, it's not going to make any difference as the resolution on those is already lower than 720p. Upscaling may help a little but not that much.

 

I have a 32" 1080P LG TV with a 2nd gen AppleTV (720P) and an Amazon FireTV (1080P) attached to it and from the distances that I use the TV at, I can't tell the difference between the two when they stream from Netflix, Plex and other sources.

You're right, it's all to do with frames per second - a bit like upscaling, the TV enhances the image quality on the fly. I do take your point though if you have a 50fps source, how do you magically get 1000fps? In simple terms it makes the image appear smoother, which is why it's good for games which are typically fast moving.

 

I know 4K TVs have an even higher/default refresh rate, but again, no doubt manufacturers want to match or improve on the base requirements. How it works I'm not entirely sure, but I am sure Google will give you the technicalities behind it all and that it isn't just a glorified way to shift more screens :)

Surprising I didn't think there was much difference in price. My girlfriend bought a 40" Samsung for around £250 off eBuyer so I'm not sure as to why they are so expensive hers is also a Smart TV. Maybe do some shopping about?

 

Also a lot of TV's use fake refresh rates based on their own "technology" so they're not true refresh rates. @micheal your TV won't be true 1000Hz unless you spent some massive top dollar we're talking 10's of thousands. See below which should explain it better;

EBUYER! why didn't i think of that. Will give that a look now.

 

That LG TV i posted about is available as open box from Richer Sounds for £120, for that price i'm willing to take the risk with 720p, although i am waiting an email back about what the actual condition of it is...

If using with your PS4 keep an eye on the latency (especially if you like first person shooters); 30ms or lower is considered very good for gaming. Avoid anything pushing 80ms or more, although some TVs feature a gaming mode to help, so don't just take the headline figure.

Of course I wouldn't expect anything less - to be honest, one of my deciding factors was seeing it side by side with another screen, same sizes/similar specs, the clarity was much improved. I would always recommend you go and look at something like a TV and not just buy it from a website.

I usually try google to see if anyone has benchmarked that model. Believe me just because it is a big brand doesn't mean it will be good. I brought a 42" Samsung in the sales about 5 years ago and it just has atrocious motion blur when watching sport and annoying tearing when playing games on xbox 360. It quickly got bumped into the back room and my 10 year old 32" 720 Samsung is still in my living room (although it does now have some scorch marks on it :().

Response times used to be an important factor with larger plasma screens and pc monitors where you wanted that super fast FPS experience but I think most LCD/LED technology has advanced far enough now for them to not even be an issue any more.

 

I remember back in the day trying to watch the football on my father in-law's 50" plasma and having real trouble focusing on what was going on because of severe ghosting.

Not true, 200Hz is a ridiculous refresh rate for a T.V and would be negligible because TV, Sky HD, Blu-ray and what have you only display up to 60Hz. Your T.V probably isn't even 200Hz, that's probably just a marketing trick of some sorts.

In this instance, I don't think it's the panel technology that's the problem exactly. A lot of televisions perform a lot of post-processing mumbo-jumbo in an attempt to improve the picture for you. Doing this adds lag. For films and TV, this doesn't matter but for things like games where response times are critical it's not so good. Some televisions let you disable this post-processing for certain inputs to get around this.

As a man that fixes and sells TVs I will chip in with..

You will notice the difference between 720 and 1080p when using a PS4. You can tell the difference between 720 and 1080p on a 19" compared side by side so definitely on a 32"

There is a lot of number fudging from manufacturers especially concerning frequency (think PC World selling a laptop on hard drive size).

Frequency is not refresh rate. There is a reason most TVs have a gaming mode.

TVs vary wildly in quality and specs even from the same manufacturer even certain models have variations with the panels they use.

So after a bit of consultation with the OH, we think a new style TV at 32" would suit us, as opposed to the gargantuan toshiba offering I have at the moment, with this in mind, i am probably looking towards Full HD. I have found this one, and it comes with a gaming mode? Can anyone top this? Or see any reason why i should avoid it?
