Ethernet Cable From House To Workshop, will not work.

I have used some Ex BT SWA underground (Drop-wire that was left after BT man did not take it away some years ago) , It's two twisted pair and I have used a short piece of Ethernet cable 2000mm long to join on to it at the house end and it has a RJ45 socket at the other.

House to Workshop

Ethernet cable to RJ45 socket

Pair one

Pin1 Pin 1

Pin 2 Pin 2

 

Pair two

Pin 3 Pin 3

Pin 6 Pin 6

 

It's about 150 Metre long.

 

Plugging the house end in to a Switch No lights show up, plugging the workshop end in to either another switch or my laptop do not connect.!

 

I have tested the cable for continuity with an test meter (Each core = 5.6 ohms that's by shorting out one end to the SWA and using a test meter at the other SWA to core being tested.)

Also test for insulation between each conductor also to SWA all ok.

 

What am I doing wrong ? Why does it not work ?.

cat 5 is only rated for about 100m any more the chances are the signal wont make it intact any joins in the cable will only make it worse

1 youre missing 2 cables and depending which 2 youre stuffed (i can remember colour coding order but cant remember which wire does what)

2 maybe but its longer than your supposed to run under ideal conditions

3 pass but if its not cat5 signal degradation etc will be different it might not last 1m in cable thats thicker as i assume its got more resistance.

 

you might do better pulling old cable out but use it to draw some exterior grade cat5\6 through the pipe

Auto sensing switch ports will most likely fail the cable.

Try locking the ports to 10mb and see if it links.

150m is way over the length but at 10mb the NEXT might be low enough to fool it.

 

Personally I wouldn't bother use a pair of ubiquiti nanos and make a bridge!

The limit for cat5 is 100m including patch cables. Sometimes you can get away with 100mbit over a run longer than 100m if the cable it good quality and terminated well, from what you have described with joints etc this doesn't sound like it is going to work. (and certainly never do it in a work environment!)

 

You only need 2 twisted pairs for 10 or 100mbit, but gigabit (and poe) uses all 4 twisted pairs, so you need to set all ports to work at a maximum of 100mbit.

You'd be better off getting some outdoor rated Cat5e, or as someone else said, use some Ubiquiti Nanobeams (personally I'd go for the cable, you can use your existing cable as a pull wire).

 

You're not giving this the best shot at working, yes Cat5e can work just fine slightly over 100m, but you've got extra joins in there, with old cable, with 2 pairs. Not exactly the most forgiving situation.

150m is a long way, so I can only see two solutions to this -

 

Either a power line system (if everything's on the same consumer unit) or alternatively fibre custom made, with LC connections either end and a switch either side (in your house and in your workshop). This will give you a true gigabit connection. It could end up being expensive, but it would be reliable.

 

Alternatively (as someone else said), a network switch somewhere in the middle, but then you'd need to provide mains power to it. I'm not sure of the regulations on having mains sockets underground or under your lawn for example - probably worth asking an electrician.

I spent more time on this today.

 

The problem seems to be the part of first cable that I put in 20 years ago to my garage (about 40 metre's long) which turns out to be 4 core screened to 'Def 10' standard, it was never intended for Ethernet but it was worth a try.

 

I tried sending internet down it but it was very poor, so even with another switch there it did not stand much chance of sending Ethernet to my workshop.

 

The cable route to my garage and workshop is now converted for telephones use and works very well for that.
