Copy photos from Supervised iPad

I have a set up a number of iPads for a primary school. They are supervised using Apple Configurator 2. I have ticked the box which states 'Allow pairing with non configurator hosts' When I connect to another machine i.e. a teachers laptop to copy photos from it does not do anything. Nothing shows in Explorer. When I open iTunes I get the attached message.

 

Surely I should be able to connect it to any computer??

I came across that the other day, and after some googling found out that if you press the home button when plugging in the USB cable you can then access the ipad.

Do you press and hold it, or just press it once as you plug it in? I'm trying to do the same, it doesn't seem to work.

Ours are on Lightspeed MDM and we were told that after ios9 you could only access supervised ipad contents on the MAC you configured them on....

Press and hold. We had 3 ipads all configured exactly the same, and only two showed the problem!

We've been using OneNote class notebook for this.

 

User logs onto Onenote on the iPad, takes photos through the app and signs out when done.

 

On another device they can either access through the local Onenote app or via Onenote.com

 

TBH In your scenario you could skip the 'class notebook' element, and just use a standard Onenote notebook.

Hi All,

 

I've seen this issue before and it's always been the tick box or your MDM at fault. You can check this by looking what profile restrictions you have enabled onto your iPad. I would be 99% sure you will find a profile change that says you have not allowed this setting, via the configurator profile or your MDM. I use Configurator 1.x and 2.x with Meraki and also DEP with Meraki. Wit both setups i've had this issue and it was just user error on the initial setup and can be rectified remotely.

 

Any issues just ask i've done about 30 DEP Meraki deployments this year so far and know a fair bit about issues.

Could you share what tickbox in Meraki please Rob? I have had this issue for a long time and have to use Google Drive to get photos and videos off; which although it works, I would just love to be able to plug a cable in.

Our iPads haven't been configured with Apple Configurator, although I had previously used before wiping when I just used Meraki MDM.

Sorry to bump an old thread - but we seem to have the same problem at the moment. We also use Meraki and Apple Configurator 2. Devices are prepared and supervised in Apple Config 2, then are assigned a student profile in Meraki. The original prepare option to allow pairing with other devices is ticked, as is the option in the restrictions on the student profile in configurator. The option in Meraki detailed above is also ticked.

 

We've never had problems pairing iPads with PCs via USB using the methods above. I haven't changed anything. Even more confusingly, some iPads in a set that have all been configured in the same way DO work via USB, and some don't. The one's that don't will appear in My Computer, but when you drill down to the photo folder, it is empty (even though there are files in there). This is usually the problem you find when plugging in an iPad without unlocking it - but this isn't the issue here. When plugging in a non-usb working iPad, you don't get the 'Do you want to trust this computer' prompt on the iPad screen. Does anyone have any other ideas?

I find it laughable that IT people are still wasting time trying to transfer photos from iPads to a computer via USB when this is just sooo easy to do with One Drive, Google Drive, Box and hundreds of other free cloud based storage solutions....

 

Hell if you are still messing around with Configurator on a Mac you could Airdrop them to the Mac from the iPad.

The problem we have here is a kid could take 300 random photos in 1 lesson and if they are all uploaded to the cloud it would be a nightmare. Would like a way to bulk delete all photos once in a while.
