Hi.

At the moment we pay for McAfee AV & McAfee Spyware for our machines.

I want to change to AVG AV as its cheaper, by far, per machine.

Do we need the spyware thing though? I cant see it installed on any machine here, and the two labs with new systems in, that ive setup, dont have it on, yet work fine.

So do we really need it?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance all. :).

Not had a problem with spyware in years, a good internet filter is far more important.

Most of these extra programs just slow down a computer as much as the spyware would anyway ;)

Well our LEAs special McAfee offer was £4 cheaper than going through a normal reseller.

AVGs AV/Spy/FW bundle is cheaper still! :D

They better go for it, otherwise i wont be a happy bunny.

If the LEA pick something you don't like then simply do what I do.

Ignore them and do what you want, it's your network :D

Running nod32 which has some built in anti-spyware (although not moved to 3.0 yet which is better at it)

Dont use Grisoft AVG network edition. We have almost come to an end of a two year contract and we are moving away. we are counting the days down until the expiry date.

I moved my school to it and have had no end of trouble with it. I find it very resource hungery and have countless phone calls of the system is running slow and the av software is running a scan, which can take upwards of 2 hours at times.

We are looking at moving to Trend Micro Systems Client/Server suite either the smb version or the enterprise version. This does not slow any of the workstations down and deals with most outbreaks before you have even realised you have had a problem. Also when you install the client side it is done through the servers login script and the uninstaller will remove any old anti virus software for you. So no need to go around individual machines to remove av.

Ive heard good things about AVG Network edition off a few other local schools?

I'd move to NOD32, but its very expensive. IIRC, more so than McAfee.

I've used NOD32 for years both at home, and for clients of mine when i was self employed as a Consultant. Brilliant product. They do have some excellent reseller rates too. The customer service I received from them was top notch.

Hmm.

Interesting. Seems that NOD32 offers the 50% education discount as well.

Its not as cheap per machine as AVG, and is more expensive than our LEAs McAfee offer, but is still cheaper than our current McAfee deal.

Hmm.

How is NOD32 rolled out over the network?

The version ive been quoted for is NOD32 for Windows.

Thanks.

NOD seem to quote high initially they said £7 per client, when we told them we had SAV for £3.90 per client they matched it.

NOD32 has a console for remotly rolling out the package it's a bit like the Symantec console.

What school are you from if you dont mind me asking?

Ive been asked to get several examples of NOD32 usage/recommendations before we buy it for some reason? :p.
