Sirbendy Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 I was wondering- anyone out there in shropshire using a .sch.uk schools domain, can you enlighten me as to what services they offer? MySQL, PHP, ASP, SSI etc etc? Our TAW provided servers give us SHTML support, but that was a long argument. PHP and SQL is still not allowed, limiting what we can do. cheers!
Guest Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 You saying you school provided host will not allow MySQL databases, or php based sites? That is just unacceptable. How the hell are you going to be able to setup and CMS based website / VLE with that kind of provision?
webman Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Sch.uk are just the domain name, they can be attached to any hosting provider as long as they support IPS (not ISP) tags on the domain name. Find somwhere better... and if you'll be using PHP+MySQL, find a good linux hosting provider.. because you don't to be running it
Sirbendy Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 TAW, last time I brought up PHP(last yearish), stated "no, as it's a security risk". I'm just about coping with an SHTML site..it's basic though. Very basic. The VLE cometh, but too damned slowly. In the meantime it would be nice to get our site set up in some form of CMS, or even converted to wordpress for ease of updating, as coding each page is a swine. I've e-mailled them again requesting PHP and SQL, but..somehow I'm not too hopeful. I could be surprised though!
webman Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 If you pay them for it, I'd demand that they provide the PHP and MySQL environment that you want, otherwise you'll be looking elsewhere. As for a CMS, I don't know if you've looked, but http://www.opensourcecms.com is a brilliant place to evaluate and test-drive all the best Open Source PHP and MySQL-based systems We use Website Baker, but Joomla is rather good, also.
Sirbendy Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 We've looked at..um..blank moment..ah, Mambo. We've got an FE PGCE recommending Moodle to us as well...it would theoretically only be a stop-gap, as the VLE *should* offer much the same functionality. But I'm a sceptic..

Guest Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 I would recomend Joomla over Mambo. I sure that there is a component for Mambo / Joomla that will allow the 2 to be integrated.

Speak to Nominet to see if you can get the details back for your .sch.uk domain.

People kept forgetting it. http://st-francis-s.walsall.sch.uk. I mean....there's no way people are gonna remember that. http://www.stfrancis.cc is what was bought when ICT started to grow within the school and we took over the hosting ourselves etc. The cc was chosen because as far as parent's are gonna know, it means catholic college, not a TLD country code
webman Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 In my experience, all sch.uk domains must be access by a hostname efore the school - eg, www or mail or vle etc - you can't just use http://schoolname.area ..... which makes it even longer.

Something to do with name based vhosts i reckon. Can a mod delete the dual posting if they're reading this please...it wouldn't work for me because webman had already replied by the time i came to delete

maniac Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 My .sch.uk domain is directed to a virtual server, so I've complete control over what software is run on it, and the security of the server so it was straight off with IIS, and on with Apache! Just found out last week they would have provided us with a linyx server insted of windows if we'd requested it too. Damn! Mike.

And I agree http://www.maestegcs.bridgend.sch.uk is a long name to remember and type especially when you add in https: and /exchange!! edit - And we host our site internally, so we can pretty much run what we want on it! GrumbleDook Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 .ac.uk domains are only available to institutes that are primarily for tertiary education and are controlled by UKERNA. More information is available here A few schools have managed to get .ac.uk but this is usually because they have links with universities and they had their first 'Net connection via them. Schools will no longer get .ac.uk domains. For more information about .sch.uk domains please have a look at the schools section of the Nominet site. HTH
