witch Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 There is an issue with a "fracture" running across the screen when viewing videos online. It doesn't seem to happen if viewing something on the laptop. All drivers updated from websites etc. Anyone any ideas please?
DJ-1701 Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 Have you tried another browser and also another website? Wondering if it could be a flash issue depending on what site you are watching on. Are you able to take a screenshot of what it looks like at all?
difinity Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 I think some of the T420s have dual graphics, using Nvidia and onboard and it switches between two. If it is, you could try disabling the Nvidia in the BIOS and see if it cures it. Might be a bga issue with the Nvidia chip. Any chance of a photo ?
mowgli82 Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 I've seen something similar when the resolution is not at the "recommended"settings? only happened on certain videos
Tesla Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 Does @ICTDirect_Dave not have any idea? he's sold a lot of them!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 I'm on it, @witch asked me this morning. Still doing a little research. Gut feeling is that it's to do with the NVS nVidia card. Wife has a similar problem on her laptop with the same card. Occurs when watching video in full screen. It only happened after she upgraded to W10 however.
witch Posted March 14, 2016 Author Posted March 14, 2016 Sorry Dave - wasn't pushing - I just thought someone else might have come across the issue as well
MrKJLS Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 I have a T420s laptop, but not lucky enough to have the nvidia graphics. Have you tried turning off to nvidia chipset off in the BIOS? Also you can download different editions of nvidia nvs driver from the nvidia website http://www.nvidia.co.uk/download/driverResults.aspx/98620/en-uk
Tesla Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Sorry Dave - wasn't pushing - I just thought someone else might have come across the issue as well Sorry @witch, I think he was replying to my comment rather than your post itself! Please don't turn me into a frog, I have so much to live for.......!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Sorry Dave - wasn't pushing I know you weren't don't worry Sorry @witch, I think he was replying to my comment rather than your post itself! I was indeed.
witch Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 (edited) I will have a look at the graphics - I must admit I thought it didn't have a separate card This is Windows 7. Mostly happens on Chrome but also on other browsers. I have tried many videos Edited March 15, 2016 by witch
difinity Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Does it make any difference enabling or disabling the Aero theme ? and what resolution is the screen ?
witch Posted March 16, 2016 Author Posted March 16, 2016 Make no difference . Dont know what resolution is - will look
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Still no solution my end i'm afraid. the res on that T420 is 1440 x 900 however
witch Posted March 16, 2016 Author Posted March 16, 2016 No nvidia on it - just intel graphics Since I wiped and reloaded it, the resolution is 1600 x 900 - everything is a bit small!!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 I'm pretty certain there should be dedicated graphics. Did you try installing the Quadro mobile drivers? Windows will only usually pick up Intel hd on its own.
witch Posted March 16, 2016 Author Posted March 16, 2016 (edited) What Quadro mobile drivers? Have downloaded everything on the system update. I can't see nvidia anywhere so I don't know what drivers to download? Anyway, if it isn't using the nvidia then there can't be a problem with it, can there? *edit I downloaded the Win 7 version of the mobile drivers mentioned earlier in this thread but they wouldn't install as the hardware isn't there apparently... Edited March 16, 2016 by witch
Tesla Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Just an FYI @ICTDirect_Dave, we seem to have a mixture of some nvidia and some non nvidia with our t420's too.

Alright then. My apologies. I could swear that the T420 (it's the i7 one we did you isn't it?) had a dedicated gfx card. in that case it's probably not a graphics card issue. Just an FYI @ICTDirect_Dave, we seem to have a mixture of some nvidia and some non nvidia with our t420's too. Some must have snuck through the net, we usually charge more for the nvidia ones
witch Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 Let's hope you didn't charge him for the nvidia one!! (I'm sure you didn't)
difinity Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I don't believe the T420 motherboards have a dedicated card. The nvidia chip is solderered to the board along with 4 memory chips. The non Nvidia board don't have them. Maybe it is an nvidia motherboard you have and it's failed ?
witch Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 Well, maybe, but it seems odd that the only issue is a small and really not bad fracture, only on some videos and mostly only on Chrome
Tesla Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 At this point i feel a disclaimer should be written. 99.999999999999% of the stuff from Dave is excellent!
difinity Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Yes, I have to admit it's a bit of a stretch. If you were to try a Linux Live CD that would rule out a Windows driver issue.
witch Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 Not going that far. He's selling it as is for £230. He has gone to the dark side and spent stupid money on a mac Where did I go wrong
