Plugging iPad into PC shows nothing

We have iPads that when plugged into a Windows PC show nothing on its storage.

 

The iPad is managed by Profile Manager and the setting "allow device to connect to other devices" (or whatever it's called) is ticked but still nothing shows.

 

When plugging into PC we do not get the "Trust this device" warning on the iPad like unmanaged device do.

 

Any ideas?

Is iTunes installed? I wasn't aware anything does show up without iTunes being installed (maybe wrong).

No it's not installed.

As long as an iPad/iPod/iPhone is unlocked when connected to the PC, it should show as a mass storage device. iTunes doesn't need to be installed. You'll only be able to get at the photos though.

It's unlocked but when plugged in it shows the device and I can browse it but it is empty.

 

There are hundreds of photos on here but they do not show

We had the same issue. Never found a reliable solution so looked at other options.

We decided to use Wifi Photo Transfer. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/wifi-photo-transfer/id380326191?mt=8

It installs a small app on the iPad which the staff open and can then get their photos and videos on any PC via wifi. Works a treat, especially if you have assigned static IPs to your iPads as then staff can create a shortcut/link to their own iPad.

What version of iOS are you on? When I was running 8.3 I think, it wouldn't work. I'm on 9.2.1 and now get the option to 'trust' the computer when I plug it in. No itunes installed, no apple software whatsoever!

Not sure if it's related, but sometimes with iTunes installed and connecting an iPad or iPhone, the Trust message appears but then the device doesn't show in iTunes.

 

If you navigate to Device Manager, locate your Apple device, right click it and select 'Update Driver Software...' select 'Browse' and specify the path:

 

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers

 

All being well the driver will install and then the Apple device will appear in iTunes. Hope this helps!

Are the iPads Supervised using Apple Configurator?

 

They will not show to any computers apart from the one with the correct Configurator certificate installed if so.

I know you generally have to plug and unplug like 3 times to get it to work, first for Windows to install drivers, second to trust the computer (which will list a possible empty driver) and last it should list what's in it. That's what I generally have to do.

iOS will prompt for a trust approval, but the device still won't show up on your computer if the option has been selected (which it is by default on supervised devices IIRC).

It does show up. Can be browsed just like a camera.

Is that iPad managed by Apple Configurator ?

If so make sure to check what profiles are being pushed to the iPad and allow the iPad to be connected to any computer.
