I'm asked on a regular occurrence to assist with downloading YouTube videos, to which I've always tried to say no to. I was always under the impression it's against the law/terms and conditions etc.

Can someone confirm the legalities of this and whether or not I am allowed to assist, for example when it comes to GCSE coursework?

Don't want to get into trouble myself here...!

Thanks.

Just keep it black and white, tell them no and that you won't help them, it's against YouTube's terms and conditions. By visiting YouTube you are agreeing with their terms, doesn't matter what the reason for wanting the video is. https://www.youtube.com/t/terms

"You shall not copy, reproduce, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, or otherwise exploit any Content for any other purposes without the prior written consent of YouTube or the respective licensors of the Content."

Simple.

If it were to be argued against, or be it that the Headteacher told me to, would I be in the position to go against that request?

I don't ever want to seem awkward or seeming to not fulfil a request, but if it's not legal/against their t's&c's...

Thimon has it spot on.

We've been through the exact same thing, we don't do it and have the support from HT/LM on this.

If they push for it, ask for it in writing confirming they require you to do something effectively illegal. There is a reason after all why YouTube doesn't allow downloading.

Absolutely within your right to refuse I would say, doesn't matter who's requesting it. You're not being awkward, you're following the T&C's of the site, no way they can argue against that, and if they do try and force you to do it... union? :p

You wouldn't steal a car...

...even if the headteacher told you to!

Not in a union... As silly as it sounds, I've not really looked into unions. What are the options in that respect for NM's?

I'm with ATL and I'm an IT Technician. No grumbles :)

Downloading from you-tube is the same as "digitizing" your physical books, unless you have brought a license, your breaking the copyright.

ALTHOUGH

you could be annoying, accept the job, and cut the video to the most useless 29 seconds. (fairuse, for education)
