talksr Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Hi there, We are in the process of having the network rewired at our school and replacing the smaller wall mounted network cabs with some proper server cabs. I have been back to our network supplier in the hope we could get a couple of HP server racks, but they say they can't get any and have offered the attached. SERV78100.pdf Does anyone have any thoughts on these? They are offering to supply and install two of the 45U 600mm wide, 1000mm deep racks with roof mounted fans and 12 way PDU for almost £2k. Can't seem to make out who the manufacturer for this rack is. We currently have several rack mountable HP servers including a HP ML350 G9, ML350 G6, and some smaller 1U HP servers. We also have a 3 unit Cisco router along with a 1U firewall. The majority of these items are quite deep. Finally, the data room the racks are to go in has a right corridor meaning the racks would need to be flat-packed. Does anyone have any idea on weather this is a good deal?

Never heard of the prism ones, would rather go with 1000 and be on the safe side I think What sort of cost at the prism ones?

In 5 years time you'll thank me I wish I'd gone for extra width when I got mine. Stuck with what we got now as there's no budget for spending 4 figures on cabinets that are ~20cm wider. 1

Size in terms of height is our only downside as we have some things above, so 45U is the most we can accommodate for, but I am getting two of them. My main concern is more about using a rack I have never heard of. I always thought Rittal were quite good but our install company don't seem to want to go with any of the main brands.

Why not simply tell the install company that they need to provide the rack you want, or just source it yourself? An unbranded 42U enclosed cabinet starts around £500 (https://www.racksolutions.co.uk, for example). 1

Have told them a couple of times that I am not all that happy with the option available, but don't seem to be getting anywhere. I have two problems: 1. it needs to be flat packed as access to the data room is very tight. 2. they are re-cabling the entire school, don't want to hack them off and have to get the data cabs from elsewhere as they may say they can't cable to it the way they wanted. I would have thought a couple of these would have been good.

Norphy Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Surely a rack would be 600/800mm deep, not wide. The width of a cabinet is generally 19"... The benefit of a deeper cabinet would be that you'd be able to fit physically bigger equipment in it. A 600mm cab would probably be OK for active networking kit but a bit pokey for more powerful servers. 1
twin--turbo Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 600's can be very limmiting if you need to run cables into the front. 800's normally have cable cutouts to pass cables in. Even if you don`t think you need it now you may in the future and it will be too late. If it is 100% server then it may not matter. Excel do flatpack Prism are good to, we even managed to get a full size technician in an 22u one and shut the doors on him. Was 800 wide which helped. 1

Well,I am going for two, wonder if I should get one 800 wide, one 600 wide. We are only a primary, but 3 form, so I should hope that one of either size should give us the capacity we need. Otherwise, it will have a width of over 1600 with both next to each other. Does anyone know if you can take the sides off of them as we would want to cross cable between the two.
john Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 With experience of varieties of rack the nicest racks I have EVER used are HP followed by Rittal of which we have probably about 20 here where I work now and they aer lovely. Go for 1000 deep ones if you can as that extra space is always worth it as you never know what random kit you need it or could means you could use the decent cable management arms on servers etc... If I was spec'ing a new setup now it would be either HP or Rittal racks for sure also think good cable management practices in them at the same time keep them nice and neat 1

The only thing I have come across over the years was that the Dell stuff didn't always play nicely in some of the cabinets due to the fitting of the rails, we ended up with Dell branded stuff as I left but to me I Would of made do especially with price difference. 1
DMcCoy Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 If you are going to use it for all the main server stuff, UPS etc, check the maximum loadings for the cabinet. I like the HPs because they have very heavy duty castors so have high static/dynamic load. 1
m25man Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 800 x 1000 for servers 600 x 800/1000 for Comms especially if space is at a premium. Most servers draw air in from the front and expel to the rear. ALWAYS blank any unused U spaces to get the best airflow and reduce noise and AC running costs. The Prism Range dismantles easily 10-15 mins with minimal tools (Adjustable spanner and a Leatherman in most cases) to get a 45U through a standard door frame! The Excel Cabs especially those with split side panels are a real nightmare to strip and rebuild and I've never understood why buying a server rack in a flat pack always seems more expensive?? They should pay you for having to assemble it. 1
