The oldest games I used to play are games I had on my Old PC-XT (1MB Ram, 20MB HDD, Hercules orange monochrome graphics, woo!). They consisted of:

Sopwith Camel (although I didn't have the later version with the birdstrikes as in the video)

Simcity - The copy protection for this game was great fun.

Also it's the best packaged game I've ever owned)

Flight Simulator 3

Roadwar 2000

Did anyone play It came from the Desert? It was an Amiga game but it had a shockingly bad PC port which is available on steam as part of the Cinemaware collection

it was great fun, especially trying to escape from the hospital, zooming around in a wheelchair trying to avoid the doctors and nurses chasing you and ducking in to rooms to hide under bed sheets.

Remember the days before DirectX?

Having to select which sound and graphics card the game would use and if yours wasn't listed praying that the default settings would do the job :)

It also had the downside of making you realise just how poorly specced your PC was!

And I had the Monkey Island trilogy in one big box that I got cheap from PC World because it had been water damaged. The smell of paper gone mouldy from water always reminds me of the Monkey Island 3 manual and takes me straight back to days of El Pollo Diablo and friends.

3 diddnt it end after 2?

and umpteen boot floppys with different himem/emm386 configurations to get enough of the right type of ram for a game to load (or a menu if you were clever)

We had some old 2006 XP licensed laptop in the store room that i decommissioned 2 years ago, written off but not disposed off. Decided over christmas to take 8, wiped them fresh XP install and put all the old games me and close group of friends use to play in our college days, take an image and replicate it on the other 7. So Age of Empires II, original Ghost Recon, Command and Conquer , Battlefield 1942, Dark Reign, Atomic Bomberman. We all went round one persons house i took the laptops, just plug in and play, was so much fun. I still take them round now on Tuesday nights and we normally play age of empires 2.

Games that spring to mind are:

Doom

Quake

Duke Nukem 3D

Fade to black

Carmageddon

Need for Speed 2: Hot Pursuit

Half Life

Professor Tims incredible machines

Never had issues with configuration, my pc back then had a Sound Blaster 32 and a Voodoo 3DFX graphics card!

I was 12 years old, I had no critical opinions, I just enjoyed the pretty game with the funny talking skull :p intellectually I know now that 1 is a better game, but I will always love 3 for reasons of nostalgia, and will never dare play it again in case I shatter the illusion.

Who remembers finally buying one of these:

And then firing up Quake 2 before going 'Oooohhhhh!'

I remember getting my Voodoo 2, firing up quake, seeing a curvy rather than blocky gun and thinking games will never look any better than this.

Not a PC game, but I distinctly remember

and thinking it was photorealistic and we were done with graphics.

It was the fact that suddenly your games wern't 'jerky' too. Everything was smooth. Movement, textures, everything :)

For those 'youngsters' out there you had to remeber what a leap forwards this was. Also, it wasn't a standalone card, you had to run it in conjunction with your existing gfx card. IIRTC, the VooDoo Banshee was a standalone though.

The VooDoo 3 was a big step up from this as well. It wasn't till they got silly and released the, frankly, ridiculous VooDoo 4 and 5 cards which were HUGE and had not more than a few problems that they went 'pop' as a company:

Then I discovered Nvidia and the frankly wonderful Geforce 2 card. Affordable and knocked spots off my VooDoo 2 :)

Don't forget you could also SLI two Voodoo2's together something that disappeared in PC gaming for about 10 years before Nvidia ressurected it. Which reminds me I went from a Voodoo 2 to a a Riva TNT2 after that. Thus started the demise of 3dfx and the rise of Nvidia..
