Cheeky request but if anyone has one of these laying around taking up space let me know. After the lcd casing as well but not essential.

We have had SO MANY of these break over the last 6 months, on E5520 and E5530s. Design flaw.

Anyway, we don't have any spare, but I can tell you that for E5520's you need to be asking Dell OoW email address ([email protected]) for:

E5520 Parts Only - Left Hinge Part Number: 3RCYY (HNG, LF, MET, E5520)

E5520 Parts Only - Right Hinge Part Number: 31FVT (HNG, RT, MET, E5520)

They are about £25 each (!). These are only any good if the top cover assy is still in good order (ie no rivnuts snapped off where the hinges screw into etc)

Ash.

Glad to hear it's not just me then. Ordered a cheapo one off amazon for £13, hopefully it will do the trick, will just be myself using it so I'll know to be careful! Thanks for the info.

We've had so many of these go, and it's no small job to replace them, you have to strip the whole thing to get at them. Latitude E5530 suffers from the same problem.

If you have a warranty though, these hinges are now a recognised fault, I had two replaced with the lid assembly last week. I've just extended my warranties up to the maximum five years, as I know more of these are likely to go.

Oh that's even better news. I'll get in touch with dell then as I believe it still has another year left. Thanks

Yes, its not a particularly easy job compared to say replacing the screen or something but I can normally get both replaced in about 35-40 mins. Had lots of E5530s go too! Grr.

Had this fault surface today on an in warranty E5530. Dell support are now saying "the back cover is no longer available" support call has been escalated and they will "keep me posted"

Yup, me too, I've got a E5530 and an E5520 under warranty with this fault, and they don't seem to be able to get the back lid cover for either.

They're currently talking about swapping the E5530 out for a brand new one, which is fine by me.

How long you waited so far?

I reported both last week, and they confirmed parts not available for the E5530 yesterday, I'm waiting on a call from the next department.

Still unconfirmed re parts for the E5520, but I think it'll be a similar situation.

Well they have submitted a request for a system replacement, just need to wait for approval.

Think it's time to check all our E5530s before their warranties run out next month!

Sounds like it might be time to crack a few hinges if they're handing out free replacements, and you've a month left on the warranty....

I bought into extended warranties on our E5530s and E5520s for this reason, so I've a bit longer before I need to panic.

Yeah I ended up getting a new E5550 with similar specs because they can no longer source the back lid, did take about a month though I think.

I got the E5550 as a replacement on something a few months back too, I was happy with that.

PIA to get working with our SCCM build though.

We've got hundreds of these Dell 5520/5530s laptops with 5 year warranties that runs out next year and so far I've probably had about 12 brand new laptops because Dell can't source the back covers anymore. I've warned them I've got hundreds of these laptops and a lot of them have hinges that will break well before next year when the warranty end.

Before the back cover stock issues I'd must have had about 40 hinges/covers replaced.

At some point I do think someone at Dell will think I must be going round breaking all these hinges myself to get a replacement but it is obviously a big design flaw.

Are the replacement hinges you have had revised in anyway to reduce the issue?

As far as I know they are just the same but can't say I have noticed any difference.

Although as far as I know the 5530s are still being fixed as they can still source the back covers, although the majority of mine are 5520s I've logged a few 5530s and they so far have been fixed rather than be replaced.

I haven't had a E5530 hinge go in a while so they must have issues sourcing the parts for them too now.

Yes it's the back covers they can't source anymore, the hinges they still can. But the back covers always get damaged too so they can't just replace the hinges.

Seems a lot to replace the laptop just for the back cover but who knows how long they will keep doing it?

Who knows, but in theory if it's under warranty its a repair or replacement. Have a batch that run out shortly and another 48 under warranty till August 2018. Slightly off topic, have to say of all the Latitudes I have supported over the years the E5520/30 have been the worst for build quality, more in line with an Inspirons.

That's true, I've never used Dell before I came to this school and they were already bought so can't really comment about the build quality compared to others but I thought they were decent excluding the hinge issue obviously, nothing else seems to have gone on them.

I've been told that this is a recognised manufacturing fault for the E5530 - what one guy told me is that is was down to a defective run of hinges, the lube used was no good, so they seize up. And then when you close the laptop lid, the seized hinge puts strain on the plastic mountings, etc etc.

Personally, I think it's also poor design to have such flimsy plastic bits in the lid holding the whole thing together, at the point of greatest strain.

Interestingly, while the E5520 has the same problem, they DON'T recognise this as a manufacturing flaw. I had to get my account manager to wade in to get my first one replaced, now I just quote that call as precedent to get others fixed under warranty.

Just been advised that both the E5530 and the E5520 I've currently got logged with Dell are now going to be swapped out with new, as they can't get the spares.

Still waiting to hear the when and how of it though.

Spoke too soon! Dell have changed their minds and reckon they have a back cover for me know, and will send an engineer tomorrow.

That's what I love about Dell, they're so organised and consistent!

I've had this situation before and the engineer arrived with just the hinges and not a back cover.

Also as far as I know the 5530 covers are still available but not the 5520s.

What warranty do you have on the laptop? RTB or NBD?
