Dos_Box Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Looking to get my youngest a small tablet for Christmas to replace a broken one. Obviously don't want to pay top whack but I note that you can pick up a Nexus 7 (used or refurb) from fleabay for around £50-£60. My question is this, are they still a good tablet in general? I know they are over three years old now and have had issues with the Lollipop upgrade but will they still play games fine and have the Android 5.x issues been addressed yet? Any help would be greatfully received
Joanne Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Get the 2nd gen one... 2013 I think. They are marginally better. 1
pooley Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 My 2013 model is still running ok. Screen responsiveness has got poor, but this device has been bounced more times than I care to remember.
MkII Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 My 1st gen one is still running fine. Daughter quite happy with it.
abillybob Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Depends on what. It's not going to play the latest Asphalt 8 very well although browsing the web and doing lightweight tasks like watching movies would be fine. 1
hardtailstar Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 My 2012 nexus 7 does not cope with Lollipop still, I keep seeing the problems apparently addressed so I update it and then it crashes. Works fine if I do not update to Lollipop 1
Ant Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 To be honest, I loved my 1st Gen Nexus, however the update to Lollipop has pretty much killed it. It's become frustratingly slow.

Yeah, I've heard rolling it back gives it a new lease of life. Will the lack of Lollipop hinder it in the near future I wonder?
Arthur Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 @Dos_Box. Do you have an Asda near you? www.hotukdeals.com/deals/nexus-7-2013-32gb-79-asda-instore-2329678 I wouldn't bother with the 2012 model. The 2013 is far better. 1
jmak Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Or what about the Nvidia tablet mentioned on Edugeek? Selling on dabs for £149: http://m.dabs.com/products/nvidia-shield-tablet-k1-940-81761-2500-500-BQ80.html?q=Nvidia%20tablet&src=16
flyinghaggis Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 As others have stated don't buy a first gen 2012 model. Since lolipop mines so slow it's practically unusable as anything other than an ebook reader.

In store only and Mrs Dos_Box is out at a Mercury Rev gig in Manchester tonight Will have to drop by Preston's Asda on my way to work tomorrow. It's an awesome price!
mikkydoos Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 (edited) Get a Hudl m8. They're pretty good and come in funky colours too. Edited November 25, 2015 by mikkydoos
Dos_Box Posted November 25, 2015 Author Posted November 25, 2015 Get a Hudl m8. They're pretty good and come in funky colours too. I already have a Hudl 1 and use it as a sat nav and media centre for the car. I really am kickignm myself for not getting a Hudl 2 before they got rid of them The Hudl 1 though is getting a bit slow and laggy so may just do a factory reset on it

Oh yeah... Look! Thats a shame. I liked them. They'd only be a rebranded Chinese thing anyway I suspect. What about a little Amazon Fire for about £50 Or an Asus Zenpad Edited November 25, 2015 by mikkydoos
