A small group of friends and I went up walking in Wales this weekend (Moel Siabod!) and enjoyed the lovely weather... including rain that felt like someone was using a catapult to fling sand in your face! We often like to take a group photo of us at the summit - in the summer this isn't usually a problem for us as there are often other people about! However on some of the quieter mountains there may not always be people around... I have a lovely photo of all of us on the cantilever rock (this one isn't us) but it is missing my brother as he had to take the photo I know the cantilever rock is a bit different, do you think it would be an acceptable use of a selfie stick (for a Go Pro, not a smart phone!!!) to enable us to get a whole group photo, or should I delete my account before my name is dirt and I am shunned in to oblivion for even suggesting such a thing? J

hardtailstar Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Self timer on camera? Most hills I have walked up have trig points at the top or a marking of the highest point. Could you put the camera on top of that and use self timer as we do that.

bald_pig Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 I use a xiaomi yi with a selfie stick, you can get some shots you can't with a DSLR. Just don't do this though...

steveking Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 My hiking bag must be 90% filled with SLR kit and the rest those annoying extras like food and waterproofs. My bag weighs a tonne and I wore out the shoulder padding on my last one from carrying too much camera kit up hills (always with a full size tripod strapped on for good measure). Mini tripods are ok (I have some), but they really limit your shots. Why is it that nice lenses weigh a tonne? On the other hand they take nice snaps! Man up and take a real camera, haha. But seriously, most cameras have a self timer, just bung all your bags in a pile to make a mound and carefully balance the camera on that with a timer so you can be in the photo with the trig point. I took a funny sequence of photos over the summer on a self timer, it showed various amounts of sky and lesser amounts of the group as the camera fell over while it did several self timer shots! It's ok though, it was a school camera and not my 5d3! S
