Dvd combo 40inch tv

Good evening everyone,

 

We're looking for a television for our entrance that'll play school dvd and music at the background in a loop. I've been looking at many different TVs but unfortunately cannot find something suitable.

Has anyone setup something like this in school? Any recommendations would be highly appreciated

I would very strongly recommend not getting a combo - you end up with the worst of both. Get a decent screen and a separate budget Blu-Ray player. Should work out cheaper and more reliable.

Why not do it properly and set up some basic digital signage? No need for any disc player, it's something else to go wrong. Any media player will loop a file, it'll be easier to run a DVD if it's silent as well as music in the background and you have more options as a result - you could run powerpoint presentations if you saw fit, apps like Xibo, stream news feeds etc. All you'll need is a large TV (just avoid anything cheap as a crap screen will have crap viewing angles - avoid any basic brands as well as some larger ones you might think are good due to name like panasonic, hitachi, sanyo etc as the names have nothing to do with the contents) and a basic computer to hook up to it to run the content. Take a look at the Intel ComputeStick as an example, just plug it into the HDMI port and it's a full PC.

How about getting a TV and a Intel Compute stick, and put VLC on it? You can stick the DVD on an SDcard and have it loop as much as you like, plus you'd be able to script the startup and shutdown for power saving.

Its a commercial one which means if it goes wrong they will honour the warranty unlike most manufacturers who won't because you're not using it in a house!

Thanks guys, really appreciate your help. I am looking at the compute stick. I was also looking at the Panasonic TX40CS520B 40inch but I believe if we can get compute stick then size doesn't matter. We can go up to 48".

The advantages of this are that the warranty is better and the screens are designed for them to be on for say 8hrs a day.

The LG Hotel TV screens are a good range to look at we have used them in a number of installs. Let me know if you would like a price on one.

I've used domestic screens with no issues. Surely household TVs are designed to be on 8 hours a day and then digital signage more like 24/7?

It's all about warranty.

 

Manufacturers will warrant a commercial TV for pretty much whatever usage. They won't do that for a domestic one.

 

My last place bought 4 50" panasonic TV's from PC world against my advice and every single one went wrong within 12 months and PC world refused to uphold the warranty. The NEC commercial screen I bought is still going after 4 years of 24/7 service.

We have only ever used domestic TVs for digital signage and various jobs around the school (like TV broadcasts). The one cheapie brand one we had failed quickly, but the rest do solid work for many hours every day (the oldest being eight years old). However, commercial screens may suit due to other nice features like control over the network, schedules etc.

2. Samsung SMDB40E

 

Both strong contender. Not sure which one to go for
