nick3young Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Hi All, We are having a strange issue with a suite of our Macs where none of them can connect to the internet. Here are our findings: Our internet connectivity is with KCom (EMPSN) and we use Capital Bytes filtering No internet connection on Macs via Safari, AppStore, Apple Update etc Internet works fine for all of our (Windows) computers Interestingly, the internet works fine when the Macs are booted into Windows (they're dual boot) I can ping 8.8.8.8 (and other internal network addresses via OS X I can perform a successful Trace Route to external sites e.g. Amazon.co.uk WHOIS is working fine for external sites and perhaps most vitally... When I connect a Mac directly to our BT ADSL router, the internet works fine. That last point led me to believe that a configuaration with KCOM or Capitalbytes didn't agree with our Macs somehow. I have been in touch with CapitalBytes who asked me to send them a WireShark capture whilst trying to connect to the internet. I sent them the data and their finding was that 'Safari is ignoring the proxy'. I have obviously entered a proxy into settings and checked this a million times. And I've performed countless Google searches for known bugs with OS X ignoring proxy settings - I haven't found anything. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks Nick

pantscat Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 How are you configuring the proxy settings? From memory I think the choices were: - Auto proxy config - Auto proxy discovery - HTTP proxy - HTTPS proxy - FTP proxy - SOCKS proxy and there may have been some others, too!
nick3young Posted November 3, 2015 Author Posted November 3, 2015 I'm just whacking the proxy address into both the HTTP and HTTPS proxy fields. I guess I should have mentioned this in the initial post, but our head also has an Apple Mac on his desk which connects fine to the internet using these settings. It seems to be a very specific issue with this suite of Macs.
nick3young Posted November 3, 2015 Author Posted November 3, 2015 We cannot ping our proxy from any computer but I can perform a 'lookup' and 'trace route' on our proxy from the mac. It returns all of the correct information e.g. IP address, name servers etc. The internet doesn't work in Chrome either Furby.

Thanks Nick Is your NTP server address set correctly on each Mac or are you using automatic..?

mac_shinobi Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Just a couple of thoughts - not sure how much help or use they will be but anyways 1) On any of the macs ( either the heads or any of the ones in the suite ) from a terminal if you use nslookup ( or whatever command it is ) to basically use DNS to lookup hostname to ip address and ip address to hostname, does that work both ways ? 2) In your proxy settings , you said you entered the proxy server details ..... If you use the ip address of the proxy server on whatever port is required and if any authentication settings are required , does that help or make any difference so that it doesn't have to use DNS to resolve the proxy servers host name to an ip address etc ? 3) Does safari or any web browser give you any prompts for logon details or anything like that ?

nick3young Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 Brimstone - I believe we are using 'automatic'. A couple of years back we had a dedicated Apple Mac technician who ran all sorts of weird and wonderful scripts on these. He could have ran one which modified the time server... but under 'date and time', it is an official Apple server it appears to be using. Mac-Shinobi - 1) Yep, name/IP resolution works both ways. 2) Doesn't make any difference sadly (nice idea though - I hadn't thought to try this) 3) No, just a blank page that will never load Dfergusson - Yep, we are actually using Impero on the Macs and I suspect you may be on to something here. I had already thought about Impero but it isn't something obvious like them being in a 'blocked internet' group or anything like that. When you log in to them, we do get a prompt saying they can't connect to the server....

I've just found this thread here also about internet issues with OS X and Impero: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mac/146619-imac-sees-network-but-wont-see-internet.html I bet it will be Impero causing our issues. I've added the Impero server address into 'bypass' but it has made no difference. Do you have any idea how I can uninstall the Impero client from OS X?!
