Licensing question

I'm looking at a new server (or 2) at the moment.

 

I currently licence 2 copies of windows datacentre for my existing servers. Those servers have COAs on them for 2008r2 standard.

 

Do I need to buy the new server with a windows server OS of some sort on it like I do with desktops to be eligible to use my licenced copies of datacentre?

 

I'm really hoping not here as both Dell and HP want £750 for a copy of server 2012r2 standard and across 2 machines that is the difference between being able to include an LTO drive and not!

That requirement has gone, thank goodness - it was always something I was conscious of. I believe that's the case for EES, not sure about any Select licenses you may have. Not a chance that I'll find the originally referenced document that said so, but @Arthur was probably the one who linked it and he's a Google god.

 

Should add for clarity and as @john states - this is for servers alone, desktops obviously still need a qualifying in-place OS.

With EES you should be able to get Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard for around ~£28 (WinSvrStd ALNG LicSAPk OLV F 1Y Acdmc AP 2Proc). Do you currently have a volume licensing agreement?

Yes, I do indeed have an ees agreement.

No need to buy a server OS License with it you can do that under your EES agreement however the requirement for the Desktop still exists you must have a base license of some form on the Desktop to upgrade from as the agreements only have upgrade licenses.
