boomam Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Hi. Im speccing up a new network, having finally be given the 'go-ahead' to go into the 'advanced planning stage'. Is there anything im missing off the costs here: New servers. Monitoring software licences. Rackmounts for existing servers. Existing servers upgrades. Infrastructure work. Server OS Licences. VPN Concentrator. Anything im missing? Thanks.
GlennT Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Is it just the server room that is getting an upgrade? If so, how about cabling, switches, air con etc?
dhicks Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Nice new switches, with a managed wireless solution? -- David Hicks

SFP's KVM w/ IP capability Wifi AP's Wifi management appliance rackmount tft Rack environmental monitoring SAN storage UPS PDU's and that's just for starters What's you're budget btw ?
Ric_ Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 An allowance for over time or hiring in additional help in case things overrun for any reason. It is also worth budgeting at least an extra 20% in case you discover during implementation that something is missing or if there is a sudden price hike.
boomam Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 Is it just the server room that is getting an upgrade? If so, how about cabling, switches, air con etc? Just the server room. Cabling is included in the infrastruture work, where ive been quoted for 2 new 800x1000 42u cabs & the moving of all the existing switches, patch panels, fiber, etc; to the new cabs. And we've already got Aircon. Backup Solutions Training? Backups will be done with Symantec BackupExec 10d to one of the servers, a backup server with several Tb of space. what about Client Machines? Not upgrading the existing ones. All are upto spec bar a few which are on a different plan. . Nice new switches, with a managed wireless solution? All our switches are HP Procurves, with the primary being a 28xx series, and the rest being 2626 or 1800s. Wireless isnt a priority at the moment. gigait core switches inc. SFP's edge switches inc. SFP's KVM w/ IP capability Wifi AP's Wifi management appliance rackmount tft Rack environmental monitoring SAN storage UPS PDU's and that's just for starters What's you're budget btw ? The main switch is all gigabit, with every switch on the network in a stared topology. KVM isnt really needed, but i do plan to spec it in. Are there any solutions that are all intergrated with a LCD rack mount? WiFi isnt needed or planned. Racks & SAN arent needed either. We already have several UPS's. We have a 12way PSU specced too. Enviromental monitoring, im not sure if its needed or not tbh? An allowance for over time or hiring in additional help in case things overrun for any reason. It is also worth budgeting at least an extra 20% in case you discover during implementation that something is missing or if there is a sudden price hike. Additional help has been specced in. I planned on speccing in an 10% 'contingency fund'. Although thats likely to grow a bit as i forgot to price up wo/ VAT. Thanks for all the input guys/gals.. Much appricaited, keep it coming. .
GlennT Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 You should have a think about enviromental monitoring and also check that your air-con is man enough to support the additional equipment that is being installed. It may be worth speaking to the Facilities Manager to see what he thinks? Sounds like you are gonna have quite a decent server room! I'm jealous!

Although when i talked to the contractor who fitted the AirCon unit, i was told that as the room was small, considering the size of the AirCon, increasing the equipment in the room 3-4 times over whats already here would still be well within the capibilites of the unit. .
Geoff Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 try an Air Con calculator just to be safe. http://www.climate-aircon.co.uk/calculator.asp

boomam Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 Are the HP KVM products any good? The only rackmountable 8way+ KVM switch, with slide out keyboard/mouse/monitor, thats also IP viewable that ive seen costs over £2000!!!. Any recommendations on them? its doubtful i'd use the monitor much, although for space saving, it would be handy to have the option there. Although it'd be far cheaper i'd asume to get an IP KVM, and then a normal KVM for physical access to the stations with a normal keyboard/mouse/monitor at the side?

Yes you could get a standard 8 or 16 way KVM and get an external box for IP access. But quality products will still set you back around £1000. A good rack mount TFT drawer (and you don't need bigger than 15inch) would be another £500-£700. So the HP all-in-one solution isn't bad value but sourcing seperate components would be cheaper. If you can't afford that go for the normal TFT monitor option, but TFT are an extremely elegant solution.
GlennT Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Blimey! How much money have you got for this project??
boomam Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 Not a clue. Ive been asked to spec it all up in various ways. Like bare essentials, recomended, best, etc; Then ive gotta negotiate with the powers that be for the cash to do it. .
boomam Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 have you included the cost of CALS? Nope, but thats because we have CALs for each workstation/licence of XP. . Im tempted to bump all the servers upto 4Gb memory. Thoughts?
sahmeepee Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Im tempted to bump all the servers upto 4Gb memory. Thoughts? I'm looking at doing that here for servers with less than 4GB in. Depending on the spec of RAM you need it's not really that expensive.
Geoff Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Just remember 4GB is about it unless you switch to 64bit or PAE aware applications.
boomam Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 I do plan on having the server OS being the 64bit varient of R2 or 2k8. .
boomam Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) Heres what i have upto now: Domain Controller 1 Domain Controller 2 File Server Backup File Server VPN Firewall VPN Concentrator Infrastructure work (new cabs, moving cabling to them, 10 way PDU, new cable runs, etc;) Upgrades for existing servers.*1 NSS Licences. 10x Server 2003/2008 STD Licences (for 4 new servers, 3 old servers, 2 NAS’s & one for virtual testing). *2 ISA Server 2006/2008 Licence. *2 KVM Rackmount (IP based).*3 Rackmount LCD/Keyboard/Mouse.*3 Rackmount UPS’s.*3 Rackmounts for existing servers. CCC Costs. Papercut Licence. Is there anything ive missed on that that you can think ok? *1 Im planning on turning the current 3 servers into a Sims/SQL Server, an ISA Proxy & a WSUS/IIS/App Deployment Storage/Print server. The Sims SQL will be dual CPU, 4Gb & 3x300Gb RAID5 & 73Gb for the OS. The WSUS/etc; server will be dual CPU, 4Gb, 3x300Gb + 36Gb for the OS. THe ISA Proxi will be a dual CPU, 4Gb, 2x300Gb RAID0 + 36Gb for the OS. Do those specs seem about right? *2 Im unsure about the server versions as well, will the standard versions do for what we need? (2x DC, 2x File, 1x IIS/WSUS, 1x ISA, 1xSims/SQL, 2xmodified NAS, 1xVirtual). *3 any recommendations on the KVM & UPS? Thanks everyone. . Edited January 17, 2008 by boomam
boomam Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 For the KVM, ive been told that all the HP rackmount KVMs are IP based. Is that correct? As it appears cheap compared to the competition at under £500.
boomam Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 Just a thought. We have 10d running on our current curric DC, and Veritas 10d on our admin DC. Out of all the servers listed, the only ones that would need backing up really would be the Sim SQL and the file server one. Correct? So, how many licences/what type am i likely to need. All i need to do now to finalise my costing for sumittal is the backup software costs, UPS advice/costs and KVM advice/costs. Thanks in advance all.
