Just a heads up - you should consider blocking update KB3086255 via WSUS. It seems to be breaking a lot of applications in Windows 7, including the likes of Office 2010, creating licensing type errors.

 

If the update is installed and creating problems, selecting F8 and Last Good Known Configuration solves it.

Right, but as far as I can tell, it's making Office 2010 completely unusable on Windows 7. Further investigation is needed, but I believe it's the case.

Its all installed across the network here and currently seeing no problems as such will keep an eye on it and update if necessary, thanks for the heads up though

Pushed that out last month and have had no reported issues, and not seen anything myself.

No issues at my schools and we do have a mix of Office 2010 & 2013 installed

So the plot thickens - apologies for not updating this discussion further.

 

What I do know so far -

 

- This affects different schools, different images, but all running Windows 7 and Office 2010

- On most affected workstations, pressing F8 and choosing 'Last Good Known Configuration' corrects the problem

- I've deliberately disabled the Windows Update service via a GPO until I can properly isolate the issue

- I've looked at over 100 event logs and cannot find any direct clues as to the source

- On workstations where 'Last Good Known Configuration' doesn't work, it's been re-imaged, which cures the problem

 

- Interestingly the first workstation reported to me I re-imaged and I made a point of re-installing 100+ security updates via WSUS

- Other workstations I only imaged, but didn't update. Just this evening, I've been informed the same workstation has 'gone wrong' again

 

- Pure speculation at the moment, but the one thing all these schools have in common is Policy Central 6, but I have no proof this is the problem. No doubt they all use other similar applications used commonly, however schools not using it don't have any issues
