Hello,

I'm just wondering if any one is using true crypt with SSDs and if they have noticed any issues. I know truecrypt has been stopped etc. but I just wonder if anyone is using it with SSDs. I have looked into to bit locker but need tpm chips which our laptops don't have.

bitlocker works without tpm chips with win 7 its a bit of a pita as requires a usb or sd card with 8.1 just an 8 digit pin

I know that is what will let us down as teachers will lose the usb key

Given the sudden and strange end to TruCrypt I wouldn't be considering that any more on a security ground.

We run Truecrypt (7.1a) and SSDs. I've seen nothing (and have read plenty) about any flaws in it, and it continues to serve and suit us well while we're on Windows 7. It'll be retired for any later OSs, and we use Bitlocker where TPMs are present.

 

It works absolutely fine. It's only installed on half a dozen or so laptops though, as most staff do not have laptops that can be taken off site (with local storage).

Considering that TrueCrypt doesn't support UEFI-based PCs or Windows 8.x/10 there doesn't seem any point in using it over BitLocker.

@3s-gtech How long have you been running it with SSDs? The only reason I'm considering it is we don't have Tpm on our laptops and are still running w7 with a view to go to w10 next summer.

These PCs are on 7 and none are running UEFI (either don't have it or are in legacy mode), they're older machines used by older staff who stress when we change Office versions, let alone Windows! We have very small numbers of 8.1 machines so far.

 

They've been running SSD/Truecrypt for perhaps three years now. When these machines are updated or retired, we'll use Bitlocker, but domain wide we'll be using 7 for a good while yet with Truecrypt encrypting portable storage devices. I can't advocate this to anyone else though, there are newer alternatives out there. I have evaluated it for the roughly eight people that use it and I'm happy at present.

@LukeC I would have a look at Veracrypt instead. It is a Truecrypt spinoff with fixed security flaws.
