Hi,

I am trying to find out how big other schools ICT support departments are.

I'm wondering how much bigger ours needs to get before it justifies an additional technician.

At my school we have 1 ICT technician and 1 network manager

Our schools size is below;

Completely vanilla system with minimal outside support (just Sims and UTM)

All research, development and implementation is done by us

Around 1400+ students

Around 120 Staff (need a lot of assistance)

Around 450 PC's and 200 laptops (staff and student) 650 in total

Approx. 70 projector/ Whiteboards

8 physical servers hosting around 14 virtual

70 VOIP phones

Soon will be a IP CCTV system

All staff have VPN access externally

VLE

Soon to be a MAT with possible ICT support for a primary school.

Thanks

We are very similar right across the board, 1 it manager, 1 senior tech and 1 technician on placement from uni., I constantly have to justify the placement student.

I hope you're rolling those Rs... :p

Just my 2p's worth, but I would be looking at:

1 x NM

2 x Technician

1 x Apprentice (make sure you reserve time for training)

0.5 x of 1 of those 2 Technicians for the Primary support package.

Just myself full time with an IT Admin assistant part time 9-12 Mon to Fri

800 Students

100 Staff

410 Computers / Staff Laptops

4 x 35 PC computer rooms

Projectors / IWB in each classroom

We are an RM system so supported by RM but luckily I inherited a well looked after network so support is rarely ever used.

220 Staff (half with byod device - ipad or surface which which technically don't support but actually do)

1000 Students

7 IT suites (currently a mix of macs and pcs)

3 Laptop Suites (2 being retired this year)

2 iPad Suites

Interactive projectors/boards/displays in about 1/4 of classrooms (increasing)

150 or so other computers (classrooms and offices)

70 VOIP phones

40 managed switches (5 vlans)

35 Printers

30 Virtual Servers

Ruckus wifi - all sites 90ish% coverage

13 Physical servers (inc the two virtual hosts)

Vanilla Active Directory based

We manage everything - our support contracts with suppliers are limited to next day hardware warranties and software updates.

Also look after site-wide CCTV and Door Access

All on-site - we don't use GAfE or O365 or anything like it.

4 Sites (Primary, Secondary/Sixth, Boarding, Sports Centre)

4 Full time technical support staff (it manager, network manager, technician and apprentice) - our working hours vary but there is someone here 7.45am-5pm mon-fri and the it manager tries to deal with any issues occurring over the weekend and evenings from home)

2 Term time support staff (mis database manager/trainer and reprographics technician who looks after all the printers)

Budget (staff+equipment/services): 2.25% school budget (target - but varies slightly each year). As the staff and services budgets are pretty much fixed the equipment side of it can change quite a bit.
