Check traffic between two servers? Wireshark?

Where I have a situation where sims.net takes up to 2 minutes to logon if my "old" sims.net server is turned off I wondered if there was a way to trace traffic between the "new" and "old" sims.net servers so I can see what it might be that's being accessed on the "old" server....

 

Could something like wireshark be used?

 

I've not used it in anger so if that is the tool, could anyone guide me on it's use for such a task?

Sure, install Wireshark on the old Sims server and see what trafic comes from your new Sims server. Wireshark will show you all traffic, and it will show you what protocol is being used for each bit of traffic - I should have thought SMB (Windows file sharing) traffic would be good to start looking for, see if your new Sims server (or a Sims client) is trying to open a file somewhere on your old server. Wireshark will capture a lot of data in a short amount of time, so it's probably going to be best to have everything set up beforehand, then start Wireshark capturing, start your Sims client, then stop Wireshark capturing and go back and analyse the data.
