Keyboard Cleaning Noro Virus

Has anybody got a tips or advice on cleaning 500 keyboards as preventive measure?

Dishwashers are supposed to work OK but there is no guarantee that all the keyboards will work again afterwards.

There are companies that will do it but I think a pretty penny will be drawn into that one. Otherwise hiring a small steam cleaner should do it without killing them. Depending on the type you use though could mean some end up slightly a different shape than they started!

A packet of anti-bacterial wipes is a good start. I do this routinely once a month on every keyboard and mouse (but then we only have 36 PCs). It's probably not totally noro virus proof; but it has to help.

 

Unfortunately the children touch more than the keyboards and mice in a school and, unless the school is deep-cleaned, your attempts can't be totally succesful no matter what you do.

Not much point doing it as a preventitive. The problem is that it is principally transmitted by faecal contamination, and kids don't wash their hands. You'd need to clean the boards before each use.

 

Might be worth investing in some tubs of alcohol wipes for each suite and suggesting that they do they're own cleaning. Of course, you'd have to stop them wringing the wipes out and drinking the alcohol...

Because part of infection control is cleaning as well as good personal hygiene...

What about having those pump hand cleaner dispensers by the door and make sure everyone cleans their hands before touching the computers?

I think it's too expensive. If the kids (primary age is easier) are told wash their hands regularly and the school is kept clean, that is about as much as we can do. We're not hospitals.

 

Disinfectant is used in the kitchens and toilets when cleaning to minimise risk and it doesn't do any harm to extend that to often handled equipment like door handles and computers. Our pre-school are liberal with the antibacterial spray and wipes!

 

Personally, I'd rather clean the traces of the little wretches off the PCs before I do any work on them. That's my choice!

I think the best thing you can do really is just make sure you wash your OWN hands after touching any PC's. You can't make other staff/students do this but at least you know you're safe-ish.

Many hospitals now seem to have gone over to enclosed keyboards. Bit of loss in key feel but perhaps this might be a way forward?

I use flash cleaner. give them all a good clean. including mice, monitors and towers.
