To clarify:

 

A light year is a measure of distance not time: 1 light year = 5.88 × 1012 miles [approximatley]

Parsec is a measure of distance not time: 1 parsec = 3.26 light years [approximatley]

 

Han fluffed that line. :)

IMO that misunderstands spacetime. A light year is a measure of spacetime. There is even a clue in the term. Distance without time only exists as an abstact mathematical concept, in reality there is no distance without time.

 

However, there is an explanation that the "Kessel run" is a route which needs to avoid certain areas - the run is not a straight line but requires deviations which necessitates any run will be longer than the straight line distance. The line is not fluffed but indicates that HS took shortcuts that no one else has found.

Interesting. However that would be down to Han himself and not the qualities of the Millennium Falcon.

assuming he was talking in time not distance perhaps he was bragging he had shaved distance off rather than time

Not entirely. My MX-5 corners much better than my old Polo did. On an obstacle course, that might open up routes otherwise not available. There might be other characteristics on a smugglers route which could come into play; armour, acceleration, stealth etc, all of which might make the MF unique in it's ability to cut particular corners.

FALLACY - It's documented that Red Dwarf can, and has, broken the speed of light AND reality and is therefore capable of infinite speed and acceleration! (Or something like that, it's been a while since I read the books last)

That's right, and it had been doing for 3 million ;)

That's right; they were "going so fast that even with the brakes on they were still accelerating" (can't quite figure out the physics of that!) but I think from Holly's spiel it was mentioned they basically have the means to accelerate infinitely. Can't remebmer if that bit was book or show :D

im guessing lots of inertia (its a big heavy ship) no friction it takes time to make velocity changes

Hmm. Well, the Red Dwarf used a ramscoop drive to collect interstellar hydrogen as fuel (hence the scoop on the front). That would give you a low but constant acceleration.

 

If you were going fast enough then the issue might be that if you're not using the fuel you're collecting, you'll suffer some sort of breach of containment. You'd have to burn the fuel to create the magnetic fields and bottles to capture more hydrogen, which is impacting the ship at near light-speed if you don't have that 'scoop' active. So you would have to gradually rev the engines down rather than just coming to a full stop, to avoid the ship going boom. That would mean you'd continue to accelerate, your rate of acceleration would just decrease as you ramped the engines down.

 

And yep, a ram scoop would technically have the ability to accelerate infinitely as it doesn't have to carry fuel with it - it's collected as it travels instead.

 

The above, incidentally, is probably just technobabble that I invented - but it sounds plausible enough to my mind at least to explain the brakes on but still accelerating bit. :)

Holly Hop Drive can be used in this instance... or they just throw the hydrogen diverter switch so that less is diverted into the engines and the remainder passes through outlets we have not yet seen

Given that the ship wasn't designed for that sort of speed, they may not have the required outlets - or they could be running at full capacity already.

 

I can't actually remember whether or not they had the Holly Hop Drive at that point - but even if they did would it affect the inertia of the ship, or just the location?

I think we need some proper famous physicist type people to try and explain the Holly Hop drive :D

 

It's fairly straightforward. If you want to start it you press start, and you can work out the rest of the controls for yourself.
