Germany - Where to Visit

Hi All

 

I'm considering taking a long weekend (or possibly week) in a German city towards the end of August. I've narrowed it down to Berlin, Hamburg or Munich (based on recommendations from colleagues and friends), just looking for more opinions. I'd mostly be doing Touristy things, sample the local foods and drinks (probably eat my weight in wurst) and try out the night life, probably interspersed with talking to lots of people and failing to speak German very well.

 

So I'm looking for suggestions on which of those three to go to and reasons why.

Having worked in all 3 and lived in 2 I'd have to recommend Munich in the Summer, a perfect mix of city and The Alps on the doorstep and plenty of hearty Bavarian Cuisine. The Hirschgarten and Augustiner Keller are great for local food and beer. Plenty of museums and the Deutsches Museum by the Isar is great for historical tech.

Berlin is excellent, and you won't have to leave the city centre to fill a long weekend, and you'll only need a few short rides on public transport to fill a week.

My favourite place in Germany is Colditz, even if it's just for the castle. Not that far from Berlin. When we went, there was very little English spoken, tourists were infrequent and it felt very much off the beaten track. The castle is immense. The heat is also immense - mid Summer it was sitting in the mid 30s every day, so we drank beer and sat around the pool of the holiday camp there.

Munich is one of the best places in the world (though, disclaimer, I haven't been to the other options). The Black Forest is gorgeous, and really does look like the postcards. The beer halls are incredible. The old quarter is staggeringly beautiful--it makes you mourn for all the history we've lost in our own cities simply through negligence. Stuttgart is nearby with the Mercedes Benz museum, and is also a lovely city.

 

And yes, it's hot--gloriously so. The only solution is more hellbier

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll have to remember to pack light clothes, I keep forgetting not everywhere gets the lovely cold and rainy summers we do.

Now if you want a good brewery near Munich, I would recommend Kloster Andechs... a favourite of ours http://www.andechs.de/en/the-monastery-brewery.html

 

And if you're heading for the Black Forest in the summer months, take insect repellant and antihistamine cream. I get eaten alive there Mr gee40 fairs better; they prefer me.
