Projector Advice

We are looking to replace between 10 and 15 ageing NEC projectors over the summer.

 

Standard classroom installs, hoping to retrofit them into the existing security cages.

 

Can anyone recommend me makes, models, suppliers for an easy in out budget experience

 

Any thoughts on DLP / LED etc.

I have used Projectorpoint in the past good service and prices. Worth a look

We're very impressed with the Casio M131 bulb free projectors.

Check your distances and screen sizes, but if it fits, the Casio Core (i.e. XJ-V1) is unbeatable for the price. Lampless, bright, sharp, £430.

 

There are only two faults with it:

1) It still uses a silly power cable. Buy some adapters.

2) The zoom range is quite limited at 1:1.1, which isn't too problematic in and of itself, except that its throw ratio is different to all the other standard projectors, and so it seems to prefer being closer to the screen than you'd expect. For a 120cm high image (i.e. a normal whiteboard) it needs to be mounted 2.5-2.7m away, where projectors are more normally around 3m away for that size image.

 

If the Core doesn't suit, the XJ-M141 is much more flexible in its mounting, with a 1:1.5 zoom range.

Depending on the age of the projector, the mounting will need to be changed anyway. We had NEC ones for a while and they were all 4:3. New stuff is usually 16:9 or similar, and if you resize the image to fit the old 4:3 screens, then it usually means moving the mount as its beyond the zoom range of the new projector.

Epson seem very reliable with a decent ANSI lumens.

EPSON Projectors have been the most reliable for us, Lamp hours have been up to 3000 hours before going dim or need replacing.

If you get the education models you can get extended warranties for free - sometimes 3 or 5 years; never had to use it though!

Over the last few months, since getting hands on with them I have come to be really impressed with the LED range from Casio. They are abit more expensive straight off but the cost of ownership makes this worth it I feel.

 

I would recommended either Casio or Epson as the first place to start looking.

We have some of the CASIO bulb less projectors XJ-A130 and they developed a speckled image - had to return for repair for a optics replacement, luckily within warranty.

Are you replacing whiteboards too? If so, have you considered getting touch LCD panels instead? They have a fair few advantages over projectors including never having to deal with geometry issues, not having to replace lamps and working better in bright light.

We are in the process of replacing NEC DLP projectors with EPSON EB-X20 but these are now EOL so we have been getting the EPSON EB-X27 which are pretty much the same spec and 2700 lumens which compared to a DLP 2700 lumens projector its very bright and a nice crisp image.

 

At our place we need to get as much kit with very tight funds so the epson seemed the better option.

 

We have a light meter that we go round with once a term when doing the cleans. It gives interesting results on some projectors so we have decided to replace any projectors that omit a lux of less that 350 projected on to a 120cm high whiteboard.

I''ve been getting in NEC M271X which have replaced allsorts - casio, epson, mitsubishi and Hitachi and none of them have required mount moves because the zoom on the NEC is very good

 

Don't get me wrong here, I have no massive love for NEC, similar Epson models would give the same massive zoom, but my predecessor bought a load of the M230x last year and the M271 is now the only NEC that takes the same lamp.

 

Using the M230 and the M271 means that I only have 2 lamp types across the whole school - the ones for those, and the ones for the Hitachi 222 UST.

NEC M271X as well Always used to used Hitachi in past place, but tried one of these here and like them a lot so been getting them in, Same bulbs for about 5 models too so makes it easier
