There must be something wrong with me!

I don't understand why i do this, but I'm hoping I'm not the only one! I've just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 to use more like a laptop, it works wonders to be fair to it and I have it setup just as I like with accessories like a mouse and keyboard etc... It fits my needs anyway is what I'm trying to say & I have my main gaming rig and a laptop from school so I'm quite happy that I don't need a full fledged laptop.

 

But for some reason (I do this with my phones as well) I'm constantly in search for the latest and greatest and am already looking to replace my tablet, I then keep having to stop myself looking at things like the Surface Pro or new MacBook.

 

What can I say I'm a material girl living in a material world.

 

Anybody else a bit like me?

Well I certainly not. My PC at home is 7 years old and although I am thinking about upgrading it, it will probably be a couple of years before I do. As to my mobile devices, I have a ASUS Netbook which is 5 years old (£50 from my the boss at my last school, who bought it and didn't like it), and I haven't had a mobile phone in well over a decade and I very much doubt I'll ever have another.

 

Most of my stuff is decades old. A large chuck of my HiFi dates from 1975, with the newest bit 2002. My three SLRs are 1952, 1979 and 1999 although I do have a happy snappy digital camera which is about 4 years old. I only use that to stick up photos of stuff on ebay. My sock knitting machine is over 100 years old and works brilliantly. I saw one not as good as mine go on ebay yesterday, for £680.

nope i keep looking at bigger tvs (mines about 1 year old 42" which when the sofas about 6ft away is plenty lol) speccing up alienware laptops to replace my 3 year old xps17 (that gets used less as i just tend to do everything except heavy duty work (so vms and spreadsheets that need at least one and often 2 decent sized screens) erplacing the surface pro 1 with a surface 3 and so on. It wasnt so long back i replaced a 7 ish month old 3ds with the new 3ds for no real reason other than i wanted to (na dhave since upgraded that with a 32gb card for a game thats not out until sometime in 2016) and have preordered a 1tb xboxone (forza le) because i dont want a usb drive on my 500gb model which is somewhere between 80-90% full

I look at things like that often. Eg. I keep looking at a new laptop or a new mobo/cpu/RAM for my PC. But before clicking buy I always ask myself "what can my current PC not do that this will allow me to do?" and that stops me.

 

As it stands, my PC is running fine on its i5-2550k. The only bit that I bought recently was a new GFX card (GTX-970) as the old one struggled with new games.

 

I think it goes with the geek territory - we like having the latest toys. It just takes some willpower not to buy buy buy!

I used to be like it in my youth wanting gadgets as they came out for no real reason, these days though its a case of "Why do I want it" and "Do I have something already which does that same function" so I rarely fork out for things.

 

My only real luxury is my rMBP and my iPhone 6+ here these days technology wise, the phone has made the ipad mini I have a little redundant.

 

I didnt get the Apple Watch based on that recently as I already have a nice watch and couldnt justify spending that kind of money on a watch, my only major computer purchase over the last 10 years - since I have been with my wife (items over £100 at a time when something has broken and never bought any top level/bleeding edge tech) has been my rMBP, that was only because it looks as though I am going to have to "lose" my little office at home and I think I have outgrown gaming now too.

Thats a horribly trend now in gaming, EA started the ball rolling with Zero Day DLC and I think its disgusting they release half content and force a few quid more out of you.

part of the problem is that games havnt increased in price really for years a new game 10 years ago was probably £40 rrp (what you pay is a slightly different issue) and now games cost a lot more to develop (granted they sell more id wager but it also dosent take into account inflation) but much as i hate to consider it maybe £50-60 for a new game is probably about right and maybe they are doing dlc to make the game cost what it should as they know they cant charge more for the base game. I dont like dlc (esp 0 day if its a few months down the line and is a decent addition not just "horse armour" then i have much less of an issue

I am slowly losing love with technology, it doesn't excite me anymore. I plan to get rid of my mobile completely at the end of the contract, I am not interested in television so the ancient Samsung 720i will possibly replaced with a monitor only. Also looking at non tech jobs so I can get back to interacting with humans again.

Its interesting some of us want to get away from tech, for me the issue is I work (ed) with it all day and outside work I don't want to deal with any tech, apart from TV. And I am going off that.

 

Although I would struggle without a mobile.

I love my tech! I have to have the most up to date devices, I currently have the S6 Edge ( because why would you want the normal one when you can have it curved!!!) and just brought myself a new MSI gaming motherboard set me back around £100 and a i7 to go with it! I've always had the mind-set 'if a new game comes out I want to be able to play it on max settings'. I don't think I will change my mind set any time soon

you can't hit them no... you CAN however take up airsoft and shoot them with plastic. (it still hurts) lol

I'm obviously paid far too little. A quick look at my bank balance tells me that tech toys need more justification than "WANT!".

My issue nowadays is while I still love the tech but there's nothing that interests me in it as it's all the same.

 

Take consoles, how many released games are actually "new" vs skinned versions of old games. Oh CoD 999, Fifa 6000, etc etc

 

Phones, yay new phone, oh wait same apps same design, same items.

I also have this problem with cars! I currently have a 206 Sport, but I keep looking at the new Civic Type R which will set me back few hundred pounds a month.. BUT I WANT IT!!! *sobs*

I have a problem of working out what I actually need so think of things to buy then never actually buy them.

I think my main issue is that apart from my car loan (£250 p/m) mobile phone (£41 p/m) and my mum's rent (£100 p/m) i don't have any other expenses except for general things like petrol of course. This normally leaves me with around £1,400 free cash a month.

 

I have been saving and I'm putting it in an ISA for a house but now i've already doubled my deposit goal of £10,000 but I still gotta wait a year or so for my girlfriend to finish her apprenticeship to buy a house, I have been trying to do other things with my money like holidays and stuff but for some reason I now just feel as if I need the latest thing all the time which I don't think is the best attitude to have as I should be investing it or doing something else with it I'm sure.

Spend away while you can is my advice. One day you will have NO SPARE MONNIES!!

 

Also have a healthy balance of stuff and experiences. Learn to ski or something or maybe do some water sport which you wouldn't have thought about. I cherish my times learning to do things way more than a new laptop.
