Hi all,

We have a couple of technical posts (1 general IT, 1 Moodle) available at our college, is this something we can advertise here? If so, where? I don't want to break any terms!

Thanks

Thankyou! I assume by schools it means establishments with education as a primary focus? or does it mean only schools, no FE,HE,colleges etc?

Not posting the salary details (or potential range) says (IMO):

"We'd like you to apply for this job, but we won't tell you in advance whether it's worthwhile for you to spend the time doing so".

To you it might mean "I want to post a range, but I'm wrestling with SLT over what it should be to get a decent candidate and I'm going to update the description when we get it agreed", but we don't know that.

Posting a range prevents time-wasting on both sides.

Well said! Applause

With salaries you are more likely to get the candidates you want... and if you don't it perhaps tells you the salary is wrong. Some employers don't seem to realise this.

Hope you do get the answer :)

I've certainly seen employers advertise at a certain salary, get very few applications (and the applications they do get are of poor quality) but will just re-advertise rather than considering whether the salary is appropriate. Salary setting seems to be very much budget driven rather than requirement driven.

I agree. What is worrying is the number of "apprenticeships" coming through where schools would rather pay youngsters a pittance to be site team, IT and even TAs (Apprentice TAs are widely being advertised for!) rather than employ someone more expensive who is qualified.

It doesn't help that people are applying for those jobs instead of telling them where to stick it... And on the IT side it REALLY doesn't help when support companies are offering the world for a small fee.

You show SLT the same job, but in corporate [with the associated 2x salary] and they don't twig that they're massively underpaying people.

I won't apply for jobs where the salary isn't stated up front. I have a house and family to support and therefore require a certain income. If I'm going to spend significant time applying for a job then I need to know that it will support these things. Not having the salary stated also IMO suggests that the employer does not have confidence in that post and therefore potential post holder. Just my 2p.

This... apart from not having a house and family to support.

It is just possible that "the powers that be" don't want to post salary so you don't spot that a glorified cleaner is on more than graduate technicians.

It very much depends on the employer. Those with a bigger budget (and I exclude all maintained LA, free and academy schools from this pool, but not the biggest posh independents and the non education sector) are probably willing to pay what it takes to get the right candidate. Thus a speculative application in those circumstances could well be worth your while.

Also... what price a phone call or an email? They haven't advertised a salary, but you lose nothing by asking for an indicative figure. It doesn't take much time to do it and, like I said, it may be that they're willing to pay the price for the best person.
