googlemad Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 We have a couple of PowerEdge R810 servers for VMWare and they have 32 RAM sockets each, unfortunately they were built with 32 x 2GB sticks! Got about £1k to upgrade them this year, if I buy 4 of the below for each server will it be compatible if I leave the remaining 28 sticks of 2GB in each server? 16GB DDR3 PC3-14900 Registered ECC 1.5V 2048Meg x 72 upgrades for PowerEdge R910 (Xeon E7-xxxx Series) Server, CT5826000 from Crucial.com Or is it cheaper to buy 32 x 4GB?
3s-gtech Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 From the specs, the server should support 16GB sticks as it can take 32 * 16GB max (512GB). I'd imagine it'd be greatly cheaper to get 8 of these rather than replacing the lot.

Sometimes non-ECC will work (e.g. in a Mac Pro which has ECC as standard) but it will probably need registered sticks due to the large quantities of DIMMs involved: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registered_memory Speak to ICT Direct. We've had some very cheap memory upgrades through them, you won't get the latest high density modules but they'll be cheaper.
SHimmer45 Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Servers need registered RAM for the higher density's as it wont support the modules. also i would check the manual for the server for how to populate the RAM slots as some servers can be funny depending on the type of ram setup you are using.

tpugsley Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 The challenge with the R810 is to know which processor you have. The Kingston/Crucial/Other third party memory will only work if you have a Xeon E7 (Skylake?) series processor. Anything older and the only option you have is from Dell. And they only have 4GB modules available.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 You'll want DIMMs of 10600R in there, since you currently have all the sockets populated it'll only run at 8500 speeds anyway. I can do you some great deals on 4GB, 8GB or 16GB Registered DIMMs if you like? They're pulled and tested from working machines are all Tier one chip manufacturer brands (Samsung, Hynic etc) and will work fine in the R810. Drop me a line and I'll give you some very competitive pricing.
