Windows 10 Group Policy

Hi,

 

I have been trying to find some info on this, i see that MS released remote admin tools for Win10 back in Jan however this does not work with the newer builds. With the release of server 16 not happening until 2016 does anyone know if Microsoft plan to release an add on for server 2012 R2 to allow you to set group policy for Win10 or is the only option to use the remote admin tools to manage station from a Win10 PC?

Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 10 Technical Preview lets IT administrators manage Windows Server Technical Preview from a remote computer running Windows 10 Insider Preview or Windows 10 Technical Preview. It does not run on the May 2015 release of Windows 10 Insider Preview, build number 10122. An RSAT package will be available shortly after Windows 10 RTM.

There will also be new Group Policy templates available to download which you can use to update your central store. It's just a case of being patient.

Will be interesting to see how much you can manage via GPO's. Really hoping there is something for the apps that show up as we use redirected start menu for students and on Windows 8 this just didn't work well at all thanks to all the apps.

Makes you wonder why Microsoft don't include RSAT with the OS, but in a disabled state? Then enable it through Programs and Features.

 

As above, they'll be new Admin templates, just as there are 2012 R2/8.1, which work absolutely fine on 2008 R2 for example.

 

You'd then copy/paste the English US language folder and all the ADMX files into:

 

C:\Windows\SYSVOL\sysvol\_YOUR_DOMAIN_\Policies\PolicyDefinitions

 

You can also do the same with Office 2010, Office 2013, Chrome and also the upcoming Office 2016.

Yeah know that but there wasnt ever a good way to manage the app screen in windows 8. Think microsoft really need to nail it this time with that side of things.

You could set up the start screen how you liked it and then extract an XML file which could be distributed via GPO I believe, the same is likely to be true for Windows 10 I would imagine.

Yeah you can do that via an XML but its not the best solution and can still be flakey in my experience.

trick is/was to copy the xml to the machine rather than link it to a network share.

I would be surprised if they were.

 

RSAT will probably be released on 1st August when the Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 10 are available on VLSC.

It shouldn't, but I would make a copy of the central store PolicyDefinitions folder before you overwrite the templates.

I've just downloaded and installed Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 10.0 (10240)

 

and installed RSAT

 

I then went to download the admin templates and note there are two options:

 

Windows10_Version_1511_ADMX.msi

&

Windows10-ADMX.msi

 

 

I presume I need the Windows10-ADMX.msi version and that the 1511 is for the non LTSB versions of Windows?

Windows10-ADMX.msi can be used for any of the Windows 10 editions that are build 10240 (not just LTSB).

 

That said, I would still use the latest 1511 templates even if you have the LTSB edition of Windows 10.
