Accelerate out of the chicane to fifth gear, power off, wait 3 seconds, power on. You will have no steering and no brakes so make sure you're pointing in a straight line." synaesthesia Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I recall last year a couple of cars having to reset everything - certainly would have included the "ECU" (vague term for the controller in what's in them these days!) as the energy recovery system, braking etc is all intrinsically linked. I have a lot of respect for mechanics and engineers in motorsport!

Oaktech Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Way back in the mists of time when I was a student, we competed in the Formula Student series in the early 00s. We had one of the most complex cars there because we had suspension, engine and gearbox computers as well as remote telemetry. All of this was using 486 or z80 processors and either toshiba or homebrew SBC. It is not possible to overstate just how heath robinson all of this was and during the hour long endurance portion of the competition the gearbox computer - a complete 'from scratch' design using a z80 - had a fit and refused to do anything. The gearbox computer could be run in manual override where it operated the clutch for you, but allowed you to use buttons on the wheel to select, which allowed you to skip gears in the sequential box, or it could be run in full auto where it read road speed, crank position, rpm and 2 seconds of throttle position values out of the ECU and made decisions about correct gearing based on these values and the position of a performance/eco switch on the steering wheel. It could also be run in preselector mode too. The driver had a reset switch under a cover for each individual system and had to hold the button for 2 seconds and send a hard reset direct to the processor. That SBC was a work of art because it was all programmed directly in machine code! Anyway, the driver had to do a reset at over 100mph so he would be able to actually slow down for the corner without stalling and was on the radio, basically crapping himself. With hindsight it was quite funny! 2

Good job they have long straights at Le Mans And yet some staff find it unacceptable when you ask them to do the same thing in their classroom?! Sitting down, stationary.

This does not stop the engine or hydraulics, just restarts the KERS/ERS subsystem. Last year, Nico Rosberg had to do it in the pits due to various faults and as the system was restarting you could see the Mercedes logo on the steering wheel screen as the system restarted.
