chazzy2501 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 You CAN NOT print from the newly designed AQA website, it's been optimised for the worlds most popular browser Chrome! ((SLOW CLAP)) AQA ="Its the worlds most popular browser" Me= "Durr, it's on 3billion Chinese android devices, is that your target audience?" URRRGH, there is just no work around to printing. Well you can copy paste into word but urrgh. The old version of the site worked fine...
Michael Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 The great thing is that Google have made deploying Chrome easy - an easy to deploy MSI and downloadable ADMX templates, so you can manage/control Chrome just as you can IE from Active Directory. Just a shame you cannot do the same with Firefox - definitely something Mozilla have dropped the ball on...

free780 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 But in edu/enterprise its IE. Our finance software recommended chrome as they didn't want to support IE 10/11 . There was a lot of backlash.
MatthewL Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 When I was in the NHS all but one of our core systems worked with Chrome and was better than IE so we deployed it. Only reason for IE was due to smartcard and java versions. Suspect its lot better now as it was 3 years ago nearly.
Michael Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Whatever the reasons from the developers, you do have other options. There could be a genuine reason IE isn't supported. There are lots of other education based websites which don't play friendly with IE, not just this one
synaesthesia Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 AQA website is not designed to work with the internet - like many exam boards, the people they have dealing with technology don't appear to have a particularly firm grip on reality. 1
Arthur Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 There could be a genuine reason IE isn't supported. Because it's rubbish?
Michael Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 AQA website is not designed to work with the internet - like many exam boards, the people they have dealing with technology don't appear to have a particularly firm grip on reality. So it's designed to work as an intranet site - presumably on one of your local servers? Because it's rubbish? Possibly - I'm not a developer, so never had the pleasure of comparing Chrome developer tools with IE's

mjk Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 But in edu/enterprise its IE. not anymore. IE had a good run, since we deployed Chrome the masses have spoken and IE barely gets used.
Patrick Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 I'm rolling out chrome to all my schools. Staff much prefer it and it's better for me as they don't come to me saying the website they want isn't compatible with IE! Downside is i can't push out bookmarks from the server.
Arthur Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Downside is I can't push out bookmarks from the server. You can. Btw, don't do what he says in the video and use the classic ADM template for Chrome, use the ADMX/ADML instead. 1
NB9457 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 In all fairness IE is gonna be dead soon anyway, so I don't blame them for not supporting it. The website will probably be supported when the new browser comes out from Microsoft, Edge/Spartan.
free780 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 You also have the updating issue. Do you A leave the auto updating on by allowing unauthenticated domains through your proxy and allow exe and zips or do you download the msi every 6 weeks?
Arreks Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Well there's no point in beating a dead browser. Or something like that.
Sagima Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Nobody here has complained yet - would you mind giving me an example of which part of the site doesn't print/work properly with IE?
bossman Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 We have been using IE in various formats for 13 years with no problems, currently using IE11 and no-one has complained yet about not being able to access a website. It will run its course and be replaced with another Microsoft offering which no doubt will have its share of bugs as do all other browsers, it has served us well and will remain to be used here for as long as it reigns. Long live IE!!! (Well until we replace it with the newer version) hehe!
mjk Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 for as long as it reigns. eh ? W3Counter: Browser, OS Market Share Trends
NB9457 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 I understand why people used to use IE, as it integrated with GP. But Chrome is just as easy now and solves so many issues for us, plus we need to use it anyway for MIT App Inventor! No excuses
mjk Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 plus there are chrome extensions that we can install remotely !
sonofsanta Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Seriously, though, Internet Explorer is hardly sat there with a negligible market share, is it? It's not 19-bloody-98 anymore, we don't have "Works best in IE5.5+" buttons in our footers anymore. Their website is hardly doing anything amazing and funky with HTML5, it's just an exam board website that people want to print from. Not supporting IE at all is simply ludicrous and I cannot believe any web design team was allowed to get away with it. We have Chrome pushed out here, but I shouldn't have to explain to teaching staff, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, that they need to open AQA in Chrome because AQA think they're such special bloody snowflakes. Daft sods. 2
bossman Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 eh ? W3Counter: Browser, OS Market Share Trends I was figuratively speaking from our schools perspective as we have had no problems with IE so why change something which has worked well all these years for us? Just because of lazy developers wanting to kill it off, I know what you can do with Chrome have had it installed and tested but believe me it is hard work trying to get staff to think for themselves let alone introduce another web browser to totally confuse them (It doesn't take much even when we have regular IT surgery's for them to enhance their personal learning). @mjk didn't mean it literally about IE reigning over the world
