nelliott Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I am currently looking at the possibly of deployment SCCM in a school next academic year. At present, the school has WDS to deploy six different images (due to drivers) and a large number of group policies to deploy software. With around 400 devices at the school, do you feel I would benefit with SCCM?
richbrowncardiff Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 It's really good (takes a bit of getting used too) but i find it worth while as SCCM also does a lot of other stuff too (we use the endpoint protection) and software centre so staff and students can install programs if they need to (before we re-image again etc) would recommend a server with a high spec to get the most of it. ours has 64 gb of RAM and runs on SSD Disks with bulk storage being on SAS 10k drives
nelliott Posted June 14, 2015 Author Posted June 14, 2015 If I do go down the SCCM route, I was looking at deploying it on a virtual server running off our Hyper-V cluster. Disk space won't be an issue as I have 10TB free on our storage array, however, I don't think I will have the resources to deploy 64GB of RAM to it, I could potentially get away with deploying 24GB of RAM to it, would this be sufficient?

richbrowncardiff Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 24 Gb will be ok just ensure you set the Max Ram used in SQL otherwise it will chew through anything you have available. We have a lot of RAM as we do a lot with SCCM and wanted to have plenty for future projects and expansion. Ours runs on Hyper-V really well

There's some rule about you can use the SQL for free as long as it's only for the SCCM server (Not used for other bits). Should come with a pre-filled SQL license on the ISO installer for SCCM unless it's changed in the last year Steve
Sam_Brown Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 We were really worried about the system requirements when we were looking into SCCM. Currently we have ours set up the following way... SQL on a Virtual Server with 8GB memory SCCM on another Virtual Server with 6GB memory Been using this setup for two years now and no issues on a School with about 500 Windows 7 devices. Can happily image two \ three rooms at a time with no issues. Our recent licensing costs were £150 for System Center.
sparkeh Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 For the cheap as chips licensing I would definitely go for it. I use it for 150 machines and its still a great benefit. (Also its running on an old RM smartcache with 4gb RAM and works beautifully). Plus 2012 is nowhere near as difficult to get up and running as 2007.

GJE You can run SCCM without extending the scheme but it requires a fair bit of work employing workarounds: From technet blogs Extending the schema is not required for the installation of ConfigMgr 2012 but it is recommended. Extending the Active Directory Schema for ConfigMgr 2012 allows clients to retrieve many types of information related to Configuration Manager from a trusted source. In some cases, there are workarounds for retrieving the necessary information if the Active Directory schema is not extended, but they are all less secure than querying Active Directory Domain Services directly. Additionally, not extending the schema might incur significant workload on other administrators who might need to create and maintain the workaround solutions such as logon scripts and Group Policy objects (GPO) for computers and users in your organization. jamin100 Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Just finished a 5 day SCCM course @NeoS and it was fantastic. I inherited a SCCM installation about 18 months ago which wasn't setup quite right. Going to rebuild it this summer and get it working for us 1
