karan_jhr Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Hi: I have recently upgraded the domain to 2012 R2. My DC and DNS is running on one server. Can i have DHCP on the same one? Currently i have a dedicated DHCP server 2003 Is it recommended to have All three DC + DNS + DHCP on one server? Since in Server 2000 and 2003 it wasn't considered a good practice What does 2012R2 says about it ? Thanks
FN-GM Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 You will be fine. All our DC's are DNS and DHCP servers as well. 1
3s-gtech Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Same here. I like to split roles, but these three sit nicely together and none are demanding on the hardware in most situations. 1
karan_jhr Posted June 14, 2015 Author Posted June 14, 2015 Since in my current situation i have a separate DHCP server, when i will move the roles to the DC/DNS shall i update the DNS records as well or changing the roles will bew enough what will be the steps to be considered in order to shift it to new 2012R2 thanks
bart21 Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Dc, DNS and dhcp all sit nicely together on the same box. Also with dhcp in 2012 it is easier to provide HA. The old method of a manually split scope across 2 servers is now gone. you can now load balance dhcp across 2 servers. This is all handled by the dhcp server and does not need external components such as nlb. Works really well too. Nick 1
karan_jhr Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 Please explain this point as well Since in my current situation i have a separate DHCP server, when i will move the roles to the DC/DNS shall i update the DNS records as well or changing the roles will be enough what will be the steps to be considered in order to shift it to new 2012R2 thanks
3s-gtech Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 You will need to manually change some settings in the DNS and DHCP MMCs (they'll be fairly obvious), and you'll need to change the DNS settings on anything with a static IP address (if you old DNS server is being removed). 1
Davit2005 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I'd also put all three on same servers. Either setup DHCP in 2012 R2 for load balancing or split the scopes between 2 DHCP servers, with your DC's, DNS and DHCP on 2 servers it will give you good resilience and you needn't worry about one being off line for updates occasionally if these are the only roles being done by the servers.. 1
Michael Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I always put all three on the same server instance. Most of us operate with a handful of servers per site, so have little choice but to put it all on one box. Even in large networks, AD/DNS/DHCP still use relatively low resources. It's more about the processing/network speed of the server with many thousands of connections. 1
