Network_Boy Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Apparently they have done for a while if you have over 100 devices I think Hmmm. We've had over 100 devices since last September and it's still working and no mention of a charge.
sted Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 yeah over 100 devices meraki is no longer free currently watching that video and there does look to be some useful stuff in there (although I could also add finally to that statement)

And you'll be able to add an unlimited number of devices for free, too. https://meraki.cisco.com/blog/2015/03/one-systems-manager-to-rule-them-all/ For new customers, Systems Manager will now be limited to 100 devices for free accounts.
Brimstone Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 (edited) Hmmm. We've had over 100 devices since last September and it's still working and no mention of a charge. I've just switched a school over from this to Casper as Meraki refused to give the school any support until they paid them $40.00 per device? Forward planning for a cost effective solution might be an idea to look at, they had 400 devices which were all signed up before the cut off date Apple have been beta testing no Apple ID deployment of iOS devices for the last year with some education institutions in the US and it appears to work well, however every comment above about this is available for you to use right now... No Apple Configurator or Mac - Use DEP and your MDM Silent App installation on iPads - MDM and managed distribution Remote control of student iPad screens - Already available with many MDM solutions Classroom management of iPad - Already available via several solutions - Impero being one (personally I think this is a total waste of money, this is part of a teachers job) Edited June 11, 2015 by Brimstone

What was the Meraki support request about? Thanks.
Brimstone Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Can I just ask why the school felt the need to switch to Casper? What was the Meraki support request about? Thanks. They had a problem with their VPP token and managed distribution, Meraki would not even give them instructions via email, so they were dumped. You get what you pay for.....and Casper is better by miles
ICTICJTilson Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 No more Apple IDs! After creating nearly on a thousand of these for managed distribution all I can say is about time, and sadly I actually feel like celebrating this.
mrnoisy Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Anyone know when it's due as I may hang fire with a further 270 deployment this summer ?
Arthur Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Anyone know when it's due as I may hang fire with a further 270 deployment this summer ? Autumn. The public beta will be available in July.
NB9457 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 I'm said in a way as after this updates come out I have less reason to buy a Mac and Apple Configurator was my excuse 1

NB9457 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Dont tell anyone !?! Genuinely, buying a Mac is like a life changing decision, I've never spent anywhere near as much on a PC and I used to be a gaming nerd haha
Alis_Klar Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) I'm said in a way as after this updates come out I have less reason to buy a Mac and Apple Configurator was my excuse Me too. I got a Mac Book Air just to run configurator on. Could have used Device Enrolment Program (DEP) instead but heyho. I only had to create 30 odd Apple ID's and during that I wanted to rip out my own spleen. To clarify the previous (iOS8) individual Apple ID requirement was if you were using Managed Distribution to deploy apps using your MDM of choice. We use Lightspeed, support as good but they would save a lot of calls if the product was more intuitive in the first place. BTW if you use MDM without configurator you cannot control as much on the iPad as you need to "supervise" the iPad to use the additional restrictions. Restrictions that require you to supervise include -Disallow iCloud and iTunes account modification -Disallow erase all content and settings -Disallow iMessage -Disallow Airdrop -Disallow uninstalling apps If a kid sets a passcode it can seem scary but most MDMs allow you remove the passcode. so pretty essential to supervise shared iPads in school Edited June 12, 2015 by Alis_Klar
mikkydoos Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Genuinely, buying a Mac is like a life changing decision, I've never spent anywhere near as much on a PC and I used to be a gaming nerd haha Get a Mac mini. You'll pick one up for about £300. Mind you Apples are bloody awful to use. Horrible little things.
abillybob Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Genuinely, buying a Mac is like a life changing decision, I've never spent anywhere near as much on a PC and I used to be a gaming nerd haha Meh. I keep my Mac at school. I don't like it, looks like a 4 year old child has designed the operating system and simple quick things like Window snapping that helps productivity is missing. Connecting to SMB shares is slow, they talk to often over the network and I had the MacBook Pro 15" Retina i7 16GB RAM with a Nvidia 750GT which struggles on playing the most basics of games. Was not worth the £2500 and for that kind of money the rig I'd of had at school would have been far far superior to this MacBook but because of Apple Config I was stuck with having to have a Mac. Oh and the iWork apps they come with are damn right dreadful and have a huge lack of features. I installed Office 2015 preview edition can't stand Apple's attempt at their iWork software... Pages files are actually a .zip and I have to export them otherwise 3/4 of the population with windows machines can't view them what a pile of bulls:censored:. You're either in Apples EcoSystem and everything works perfectly or you're not and it all goes terribly wrong. It's the individuals call and personal opinion but god I hate the things.
Alis_Klar Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) Well I was well impressed with the Macbook Air. Close the lid (running on battery) with 20 apps open and 10 browser tabs come back a week later open the lid and everything is still there 1 second after opening the lid! Never experienced that before (sheltered life). I do dislike having to look up how to do a screenshot every time I need to do it and miss the minimise all command. What I object to is idiot SMT buying expensive mac Pro's and running Windows 7 on them not even trying to use. Mac OS X. I did try giving them Windows running as a VM in Parallels but "it was too hard". It's really not too hard. The reason I didnt use boot camp is trying to encrypt both OS's using filevault and bitlocker was not working. So I encrypted Mac OS X using filevault which includes the VM image as it is on the same volume. Worked really well. Edited June 12, 2015 by Alis_Klar

If i tried to give any of our SMT anything but a Mac now i would get a mouth full of abuse. I jokingly said after 1 year to the Head want me to swap your Mac for your old Windows laptop , she grabbed her Mac tight against her chest, folded both her arms over it glared at me and said don't you even dare joke about it. I love the cmd+shift+4 option for screen shooting instead of '3' so you can just grab the area of the screen you want. The ability to have up to 16 multi desktops, dashboards, and use gestures to navigate makes the OS so much more productive to use. Remote Desktop works much better on Mac OS X than on Windows, i just use 3 finger gestures to keep jumping from server to server with the odd full screen terminal window in between for the Linux boxes.
Alis_Klar Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 @Quackers I don't have a problems with them having Macs but it seems a rather explensive way to run Windows. Does your SMT primarrily work in Windows on their Macs?
InterwebsGuy Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) Meh. I keep my Mac at school. OS X in its basic form, if all you do is a bit of Office/iWork work and Internet browsing isn't too bad. It's a lot of money for that, but that's your choice. However, OS X is not a mature operating system - it infuriates me at times on my MBP. It's missing lots of little things Windows has the ability to do (pretty basic things, that OS X ought be able to do), little things you don't notice until you try to do them in OS X, or it makes them a nightmare to do. Windows really is far more mature, capable, grown up and intuitive, especially when the time comes that you actually need to get things done. OS X aside though, I do tend to like Apple stuff. It's nice looking and built to a good standard. Edited June 12, 2015 by InterwebsGuy

Does your SMT primarrily work in Windows on their Macs? Nope, no Windows installed on the Macs. We use Mac OS X only on all our clients. We use 2X to bring SIMS/PARS to them. With the exception of the Head/Deputy Head/My Self who Have the Macbook Pros the rest of the staff have Macbook Airs which cost us £524 each without VAT, which is not a bad price for a laptop when you take into account the fact it has SSD/12 Hour Battery and its portability with it being so light.
Alis_Klar Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 You would pay the same or more for a comparable spec DELL or Lenovo Ultrabook with SSD. Microsoft were marketing the Surface as replacment for a laptop and tablet and justifiying the cost as a 2 in one device. However that assumes there are any apps worth using on the Windows Store. The likes of DELL and Lenovo must be really p*$$*d off with MS at the moment as they are losing sales to Apple, Android and Chromebooks. Although they do make Chromebooks.

Well to be fair, you can use a Surface Pro without ever touching the Microsoft app store. No reason why OEMs can't make similar products and market them the same way (as they already do).

Brimstone Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 You do to put it in Supervise mode if not using DEP Yes if you are using DEP, why not use a free service?
