Ours is currently insured on a Fleet Policy with a Mitsubishi specialist insurer but Adrian Flux were quite competitive in the past though and cover contents iirc. They'd be worth a call. Don't forget to get some photos posted up! 1

rad Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 (edited) @tech_guy Hopefully it isnt on a low loader, instead still parked outside his house, he has had that one about 4 years, it started life as a shell, you are welcome to browse the gallery in Photobucket. I am longing for a T5, its on the bucket list. If you get stuck for insurance, browse the T4/5 Forum, VW T4 Forum - VW T5 Forum and its a good job you didnt go for the Brazilian T2 Danbury. The FiL saw the shells in their raw state before conversion and wasnt impressed hence went down the route he did. The Yellow bay had an original 2ltr Auto engine. The Blue is fitted with a Golf diesel 1.9 130bhp (now down tuned I believe) Edited May 29, 2015 by rad
pastymaster Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Nice choice, I do like the T5's and that's what we will probably move up to at some point in the future. Danbury as very expensive and are known to cut a few corners. I've not heard of Hillside Leisure, but hopefully they'll do a great job.

tech_guy Posted May 29, 2015 Author Posted May 29, 2015 I know Danbury purchased the last 100 or so T2's from Brazil as they are ending production there. It's a shame as it's such an iconic vehicle. We went for Hillside Leisure in the end as we were able to tour their factory up in Derby and see the conversions being built after talking to them at the Caravan Show. What they include as standard on their conversions most of the other companies seem to charge as an optional extra. I'll post some pics when we get it. 1

If you haven't already I recommend you take a look at the forum, owners share information about stopovers (usually free ones), and all aspects of ownership. My dad has a Swift motorhome and they are very reasonable on the premium, and have paid out a £1k claim with no quibbles when mice nested under the dash of the van and feasted on the immobiliser and ignition cabling... I insure our touring caravan with the Camping and Caravanning Club which is reasonably priced and seems comprehensive. Might be worth a look if you are a member/are planning to join.

We insure this and our 1983 XR3i convertible on an agreed value classic vehicle policy with Peter Best Insurance, its costs not much more than a couple of hundred quid a year!

VW - expensive due to Scene tax Ford transit - varying degrees of rust depending on age. Trafic/Vivaro/Primstar - all the same, had injector issues but good for parts Toyota - the hidden gem, if you like its style To be honest, it all depends what size you want, how big you want and what you want to convert it to. See Gumtree for ideas from the Australian people that have come over here, converted one and then traveled the country. 1

For me the initial cost of buying the van wasn't overly horrific (certainly not free, but not outrageous). It's the ongoing costs of maintenance that you have to watch out for, mine's in for MOT and service at the moment and I fully expect it to need more welding to pass the MOT (same thing most years). Basically mine is an old car and as a result things are going to go wrong on it (unless I pay for a full restoration which I can't afford).

He's a kitchen fitter, so he built a custom interior which slid in and out of the van when needed. He kept in the garage when not camping. It was quite something. For what it's worth, which may be nothing, having owned a VW camper, if I ever wanted a camping van I'd probably get a regular van and put some basic camping equipment in the back. From experience, all you need is bedding and a cooker.
