Veeam Installation and Setup

Hi

 

I am just experimenting with some virtualisation. i have setup a VMWare ESXi 6 host and added a couple of VMs. I have installed vSphere on my Windows 7 station and can connect to the ESXi 6 host with no trouble and administer it. I have downloaded and installed Veeam 8 Free. It is installed on my Windows 7 station and the installation went smoothly and it opens and everything appears to be OK. So, when I try to add a server, it asks me for the DNS name or IP address of the VMWare server. I am assuming this is the IP address of the ESXi host which I am entering. Next, it asks me for the server administrators credentials. Are these the credentials of the ESXi host i.e. the root account or the credentails of the machine where vSphere is installed. I would really appreciate any advice on this. Thanks.

If adding standalone hosts you need to enter the root account password that you entered on the host itself I'm pretty sure.

 

If adding via vCenter I think it needs a user with administrator rights within vcenter.

Hi, that's what I thought. It's a standalone host and I am entering the root account password that I setup on that host but I am getting the following error:

 

'Failed to login to IP address by SOAP, port 443, user "root", proxy srv:port0. Unknown API version format: "dev"

 

The ports on the ESXi host are the degault and have not been changed?

From your desktop PC can you get a console to a VM running on a host??

 

It might not be related but I know that if you try and get a console session to a host but you are on a different logical network and have no route directly to the host it fails to establish the console connection.

Someone asked a question about that same error on Veeam forums, but with B&R, not Veeam Free. That was before Update 2 came out to add support for ESX 6.

 

Have you checked if your Veeam is upgraded to whatever latest update is for Free?

Have you installed Update 2 for B&R 8 to add official ESXi 6 support?

 

That error has been seen on the Veeam forums for vSphere 6 so may be resolved in the update.

I don't think Veeam works with the free version of ESXi either, but might be wrong on that - not sure whether you are using the free version or the licenced version of vmware.

Indeed! Veeam does not work with free version of ESXi. Veeam free is quite basic (it will do a full backup but doesn't do incremental, and i don't think it's great with scheduling either!), tho it should connect OK, unless it's the ESXi free it's having a problem with.

I can confirm Veeam free works with Hyper-V, if that's of interest to you.

I downloaded and installed Update 2 for Veeam 8 Backup and Restore Free and it connected with no problems. Thanks
