nicholab Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 How do you enable end user to install their home printer on work laptops. As most printer drivers come bundled up in a setup file. This is on windows 8.1 or do you find most of the drivers in the OS?
JasonNVSD Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 They have to have local admin to install a host-based printer. You can try installing it for them, but a lot of the setup packages require the printer to be present.
Oaktech Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 On 8.1 using our directaccess setup I've been using SCCM remote control to do it for them over the phone, they call in once they have a UAC box on screen, I do the credentials and hang on until a test page gets spat out and then I move on. I've agreed some extra hours late working to cover it.
free780 Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 If they give you the printer model. Install the drivers while at work.
MatthewL Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Simple answer as I wouldn't, there is a data loss issue here. Staff could print out all sorts and you have no ideas. If they want to print they do it at work simple as I would say.
fairm010 Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 We ask for the make and model of the printer and we install them in the office for them. If the installation requires the printer to be plugged in and there is no "Plug in later" option, we ask that they bring the printer in.
leeshellard Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Add a ad group to the local power user group. Then add the user to the ad group for one day. That's what we do anyway.
Pete10141748 Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I just make the user a Local Administrator on his/her laptop, and then switch them back off of it again the next day.
